Default engine noise at start up when cold

http://members.aol.com/supramk2/truck.wmvtundra has a knocking sound after start up when cold. any ideas on what it is. I know what I have heard about piston slap but this is on the drivers side only. I have added a link hope it works. the sound clip takes a second to start. when you hear the truck start there is a few fast rap sounds like 3 in a row then when I rev the truck a few times it make the sound as the engine goes back to idle

Listened to the clip, heard what you were talking about, mine has made this same noise for almost 5 years now. alot of ppl report the same thing, so seems normal. and after 5 years, no problems.

just on startup right? after it's warm, nothing? doesnt make as much power til its warm and the noise is really obvious under throttle?

if so, yeah its the pistons...wait til its warm to get on it, the pistons need time to come up to op temp and expand to get the tolerances correct. running more viscous oil helps too, but its best to just let it warm up. mines always done it.

I just got a used 04 DC with 24k on it. I did not notice it a few weeks ago when I test drove it but now that it is getting colder here in PA I do hear a bit of noise on start up... Once it runs for a few min. the noise goes away. It seems like something isnt getting oil or there is play somewhere until it heats up. I am glad im not the only one hearing this.

mine has done it f o r e v e r.
synthetic oil does help. yes virginia, i have gone from supertech dino to supertec synthetic. the 5w synthetic is smoother and faster at cold start.
whether the ultimate longevity of the motor is different is debatable.
i always putt my way along until the temp comes up irregardless.

well i found out what the noise is. when cold and the engine idles up the belt runs over the top of the ac compressor pully and slaps back into the grooves.
and every time I rev it up the belt moves out of the grooves and slaps back in. it souded like metal on metal banging...un real so no piston slap
