Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Broke my Rear Diff?", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I've gone through two of them I am assuming because I drive the heck out of my truck. I don't do big one wheel burnouts, but I do tow a lot, travel on dirt roads fast alot, and I go to the drag races alot too. I just want to find something QUICK that does what I need it to. My diff i on its way out FAST FAST FAST, and I have to drive to Miami and back towing a trailer from memphis on th e 14th. I want a lsd, but it dosen't sound like the TRD unit is any good, so that makes me want to go with the powertrax. But i don't know how the powertrax will do durign aggressive on road cornering. I mean, I can handle the slides (i actually like them) but I don't know if it will allow me to actually corner while under full throttle and not sliding. Are there any other options out there? I don't mind spending the money. It's the spyder gears that s***, so thats what I need to get beefed up.
Marco
So what would everybody recommend? I think i'm gonna have to replace the ring and pinion again due to the amount of slop the diff has developed and from the metal I've been draining out.
One last little thing: I drained teh gear oil ou tof the diff this last time, and there was so much metal in it that after having sat in a gallon milk jug for about an hour a speaker magnet still stuck to the SIDE of it.
I don't know why they don't put in a (4) pinion differential as an option. When I was working on cars a lot, everything that was expected to take some punishment used the (4) pinion set-up. A straddle mount drive pinion (3 bearings) is also a big help. All the old pre '65 Chevy posi-traction's used a (4) pinion, as well as the heavy duty Ford 9 inch. Even the ancient 'pre 49 "early Ford" differentials had straddle mount drive pinions and (4) pinion differential cases.

Do you mean the powertrax? Do you get any binding between the right and left wheels when making full lock turns?

I'm pretty certain that Tacoma rear ends with the locker are 4 pinion. It's an 8in though and I've heard through TacomaTerritory that they are virtualy indestructable. Maybe you could put a tacoma rear in somehow?

If the Tundra has the same rear end as a Tacoma than why doesn't Toyota put that locking rear differential with the four pinion spider gears in the Tundra? I wonder if you could unbolt a Tacoma carrier and differential assembly from a wrecked Tacoma and bolt it into a Tundra using the Tundra axles.

I think the only difference is that the axles are splined differently. Either the tundra ones are biger, or they have more splines, or both. Otherwise, it seemd like an idea. I wonder if it will take toyota 20 years to have the same idea.
I am kinda leaning towards the TRD LSD "chunk" replacement deal, since my whole rearend is pretty much shot. I I got th powertrax, I'd have to rebuilt what I have, and buy new parts.
When you change it out, make sure to clean the inside of the axle housing including the axle tubes. You want to swab them and get out all the ground up metal, so it doesn't wreck the bearings and gears in your replacement.

Dude Boy is right. Burnt out a rear wheel bearing on my Olds wagon. But after trying to wipe out the housing, that lube sure is some sticky stuff, I flushed it with kerosene by jacking the wheel end up. You wouldn't believe the junk that came out.

The Tacoma comes in two available differential sizes. The standard open differential uses a 210 mm (~8.25") diameter ring gear, which is the same as the Tundra. The optional Tacoma TRD electric locking 4-pinion differential uses an ~8" diameter ring gear. The two different third members are not interchangeable.
