I was wondering if anyone else has been given a smaller oil filter by the parts counter at your local Toyota? I just changed my oil today and noticed that the filter Toyota gave me is smaller than the previous ones and it also has a different number on it. I wonder if they gave me the wrong one or has Toyota changed the style? I have changed my oil three times so far and these are the numbers:
factory filter- 90915-20004 on filter (no box)
1st oil change- 90915-YZZB5 on box, 90915-20004 on filter
2nd oil change- 90915-YZZB5 on box, 90915-20004 on filter
3rd oil change- 90915-YZZB9 on box, 90915-20003 on filter
BTW the truck is a V8. I hope its safe to drive the truck if I did get the wrong filter, Hopefully they just changed the style, Can anyone help me out?
I think that B9 is for another application. It should be equivalent, but I don't think it's technically the right filter. That might be for the 4runner engines, no that's the B1. I was just talking to someone about that. I thought the 90915-20003 was discontinued but I do think that the B9 is still a good number.
The toyota parts guy at my local dealership told me that there were 2 filters that fit the v8 tundra. he said one was made in the us and one was made in japan and cost about twice as much as the one made in the us.
I read somwhere on the forum before that the factory installed filter was more expensive and went under a different part number. It was strictly for the break-in perod.
Joe,
After reading several posts on the"Engine and DriveTrain" section of T.S., I read several posts on the oil filters saying the YZZB5 filter has no by pass valve in it and the 20004 filter has a bigger filter area along with a bypass valve in it. I also believe this is the original factory filter that came with your truck.
Can anyone verify this as correct? It should be in one of the past subjects that are archived on the site.
R.B.
You are correct on all counts. The original, come with the truck 20004 filter is slightly longer, has a pre-lubricated silicone rubber o-ring seal AND anti-drain back valve, and has a bypass valve should the filter clog. The replacement YZZZ.. filter is shorted, has a regular rubber seal and drain back valve, has a different foam type filter element and yes, no bypass valve. Get the 20004 filter for $10 bucks or consider a premium Hastings, Amsoil, Pure One or Mobil 1 unit for the best choices!
Yep, that what comes installed from factory. It is also what Lexus uses @ oil and filter changes. I picked up half a dozen about a month ago and thats what will be installed at EVERY OC on mine.

Not True. The Factory filter might have been spec'd for the initial oil, however, the 20004 and 20003's are way higher quality...a completely different filter.
These filters CAN be had for about $25.00 each from TRD.TRD offiicial website
They are called sport filters and are Red TRD labled. And carry a crossover part #. TRD offiicial website
They are considered sport/high performance filters(made in Japan)
And the dealers are pushing Taiwan stuff.($3.00 filters with a higher profit margin...I feel. Toyota says it meets spec.but I feel not so.
I am not happy about this either.
I will just use K&N, Mobil 1's or PureOnes' in that order.
I have a case of these Dealer Replacement Taiwans laying around here for a cheap price to someone who wants them. The "D1's".
The -D3 replaces the -20004 and is made by Denso in Thailand. I have cut open the filter and find there is nothing wrong with them. A good high-quality filter. I find no reason to pay 3x the price for a M1 filter. If you are posting this to sell filters, there is another forum you should use.
I changed my oil and couldn't find one filter that was the same length as the original, but all part numbers cross-matched the toyota numbers. I read a lot of stuff about how this filter sucks and this other filters are the bomb. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but until they back it up with engineering data I'll continue to shake my head. I spend only what i need to and change my oil regularly. BTW for those of you changing oil at 2-300 miles to "get the metal shavings" out of your engine do you find any? If you do (they must be big enough for the naked eye) then you've got impending engine failure. I use a Fram filter from Wal-mart (3 vehicles, a combined 500,000 never an engine failure). I use regular oil (I can't run the engine hot enough for synthetics to be of use). If your oil pressure is fine and your engine isn't run under extreme conditions (driving in a desert everyday where sandstorms are frequent) and your using a filter that meets Toyota specs (and save your reciepts) your fine.

PS Oops, forgot. Got a 15% discount @ 6.
I called every Toyota and Lexus dealer in the Seattle area and they all told me that the -20004 was not available in the USA.
