Changing timing belt on Tundra damaging water pump?
Had the timing belt changed on my Tundra. No leaks before from the water pump. Now the water pump leaks? Can damage be done to the water pump when the timing belt is changed out?

I had the same thing happen. I didn't change the water pump when I had the timing belt replaced because the water pump wasn't leaking. I had the timing belt changed and about 3 months later the water pump started leaking. I asked my mechanic what had happened and he said that the new belt is slightly tighter than the worn one and that causes extra pressure/friction on the water pump seal.

how are things at HB? years ago I lived in Newport just down the road.
your mechanic is correct. the new belt applies more tension and the bearings have already mated. Although a lot of people don't like the idea because of the cost, you should change tensioner and water pump when you change the timing belt. I did at 105,000 and have had no problems at all. also might want to change any gaskets or seals you disturb at that time as well.

It's a good idea to change out the water pump and thermostat each time you have the timing belt done to preempt this sort of thing. Also advise having them replace tensioner and two cam pulleys at your second (around 200K)

You should allways change water pump/fluid thermostat and associated seals behind timing belt when doing this process due to the cheap price of seals 2 seals crank and cam i think and while it's open it is imparative to do theses!! it is easy to second guess why water pump leaks now but thats why ya change it when ya have it torn apart so ya do not end up having to second guess it!! Did the SW not suggest this to be done ? if he did not i would be surprised, and he is probably not required to, but live and learn the hard way is not the easiest but **** happens!! i have been there before but they suggested that this be done and i concurred 100% do it now not later!!
