Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Transmission filter install question", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I'm getting ready to install a magnefine in-line transmission filter in my 05 AC. Since the filter is directional, does anyone know which cooler lines are the supply and return on the 5spd auto? I was planning to install the filter in front of the cooler at the radiator. I did some searching on this and couldn't find any reliable info.

Mine is in the return line to the transmission from the upper fitting on the cooler. i don't know how much difference there is between the '03 and '05.

I have a Magnefine filter coming. Any ideas how often needs to be changed? Do you change the whole filter (housing included) and is there an insert filter element? 85000mi on the truck, btw. Fluid looks bright red, but I don't think it was ever changed. Thanks.

I believe IPT recommends 15K change intervals. You change the whole thing.
I also believe that John from IPT recommends against the spin-on filter kits for the trans because of flow issues. Maybe John can jump in on that.
