Default SS Autchrome Headers - update?

I have read the previous threads and it sounds like the SS Autochrome headers may be a better value. Any long term updates from those that have them installed? Any burnout, cracking or other problems?

Had mine for about three years and 30,000 miles with no problems yet. I had the JBA headers before though and the JBA headers were quieter.

V8toilet why don't you post some dyno's of the SS's then if that is what you are running? Just wondering how much different they are than JBA.

V8 toilet, how do you mean quieter? Did you feelthe JBA's produce more low end torque? I understand the S&S are more mid-range, does that sound right to you?

The difference in power between the two is negligible. I have the dyno graphs of a friend’s truck with the SSautochrome headers run on the same dyno as mine did on the same day that I ran mine with the JBA headers. I tried to find my dyno files from my old dyno runs but could not find them. They used to be located on TS but since TS last cleaned everything out they since erased them. I'm sure they are boxed up somewhere since my last move. From what I do remember though is that the JBA headers had a slight low end advantage that was in the low single digit numbers and they were pretty even as the RPM climbed.

The JBA headers with the stock exhaust made the truck sound pretty much like it did stock except that it sounded slightly smoother. With the SSautochrome headers on I can hear some of the firing pulses of the engine in the lower revs and the exhaust noise is slightly louder than stock and I mean just slightly. It kind of has a hollow sound to it in the low rev range (under 3000 RPM).

For the price difference though the SSautochrome headers are fine. They mainly differ in the collector design. The JBA headers have a more flow friendly design with a cone that helps direct lower RPM flow. The SSautochrome headers just have the four pipes dump into one large collector, which at lower RPM may cause the exhaust gases to tumble or be turbulent as they enter it.

I will say though that the SSautochrome headers are still a big improvement over the stock log style manifolds and the PEAK gains are neck and neck with the JBA headers.

Yes thank you very much I think I will order some as well. I don't see that the firecone collector is worth about three hundred more!

The other truck V8 is talking about is my truck. The headers are fine still, and they are like 5 years old now.

Smile Re: SS Autchrome Headers - update?

Hello all

3 1/2 years 76K on the Truck, no issues in performance and maintenance of the header. Solid performance as day one.

the Headers are very discolored. I tried to clean a little area and underneath all that stain is still stainless steel brightness. All the bolts are rusted.

One issue not related to the header performance is that I have now a check engine light.

Plug my laptop base OBD2reader and returned back an code P0155 Faulty O2 sensor(Bank2, Sensor1)

P0155 Code means on my Tundra is
BANK 2 - passenger side (Bank1 means driver side)
Sensor 1 - Front before CAT (Sensor 2 is after CAT)

History,

Original SS autochrome headers 00 to 04 3 years ago has one flaw.

The O2 sensor bunyong on the passenger side header was pointing directly to the side of the engine block instead of pointing down to the ground. That leaves me 1/32 of an inch clearance between the 4 wires of the O2 sensor to the engine block for clearance.

No way this baby will come out or be able to put a new one in without loosing or removing the header and flanges.

Back then 3 1/2 years ago, since the original manifold/sensor where taken out of the truck, I just transferred the original O2 to the new header and did not think I will ever pull/remove the O2 sensor out again.

Wrong,

76K later, and kicking myself as I type this message, I should have just waited 1 more year for Version 2 release with the correct O2 Sensor location.

So now, I am stuck and dreading 2 weekend to take out and put back the passenger SS header out.

Then I have to take the header to my favorite muffler shop. Have them plug up the original bunyong hole and weld a new one on the corrected position.

My favorite muffler shop say it should be fine doing this.

One more thing, SS Autochrome tech support back then was a PITA to deal with. I called SS Tech to see if I can order a spare gasket set.
Hopefully that change now. Still remember how I dreaded the 45 to 1 hour wait time rude tech experience back then.

Because I need a new gasket set and do not want to contact SS Autochrome tech support again, I just decided to go and contact JBA for the gasket set (Just the cylinder head/manifold gasket), not getting the Flange collector/downpipe gasket as tech support from JBA say that the flange gasket is the current o-ring from toyota and i need the flat triangle 3 hole gasket.

Hope this help for SS autochrome headers owners

I was just going to ask someone today about the discoloring of these headers. So you say that you cleaned a little area and it was shiny underneath, what did you use to clean it, will the rest come off?
