So, it has gotten worse, and just yesturday it finally threw a code and CEL went on. Brought it into the dealer and they said code reads lean on bank 1 and lean bank 2. $200 later they are telling me that both Air Flow sensors are bad and they have to order them, they'll put them in on Monday.

Did they tell you the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor was bad, or the two oxygen sensors?

Sorry to ask but where are the two air flow sensors? My truck only has one air flow sensor that I am aware of.

i'm pretty sure the dealer will just be throwing parts at it from their drop down list of likely culprits, at owner expense, until they tame the beast. but, i could be wrong. knowing what/when/where/how the code(s) were thrown and what the code(s) were would be helpful to someone here willing to help diagnose his issue on this forum.

At least running lean makes sense, they're hopefully on the right track. I hate when they chase things at owners expense.

The codes are po171 and po174.

It threw the CEL going up a hill at normal low rpms, no CC. The Dealership says that the MAF is fine and so we're into replacing the 2 sensors. More details on Mon.

At this point I think that I'd want to see the fuel pressure on the rails.

Agreed. Seems odd that both O2 sensors would fail at the same time without a common cause (such as lack of fuel flow).

To the original poster: I'd make it very clear to the dealer that if their fix doesn't solve the problem then the $200 diagnostic fee is refunded.

I would've thanked the dealer for their diagnosis, bought the two O2 sensors and did them myself. Looking into my dealership crystal ball, something tells me they're going to say "The O2 sensors are seized and we can't get them out without blah, blah, blah" Hopefully that doesn't happen.

    Good excuse for headers.

I have a question though, would failure of o2 sensors cause the motor to shut off? Failure causes super lean fuel mixtures, causing computer to shut motor down? Most stuff I've read implies that our trucks go rich if a sensor goes bad, kind of a limping safety mode.

So They replaced both AF sensors part 89467-0c010 and it appears to have fixed the problem. Only 1 day driving it, but went up a few steep grades with a heavy foot and no problem! My local dealership is a bunch of idiots though, gotta find a better option.

Thanks for the help everyone, I'll continue the post if problem continues.

Wow - still have no idea if it was an air flow sensor (properly termed a MAF sensor of which there is only one) or the O2 sensors. Guessing it was the O2 sensors? Someone is getting a ride here.

I checked the part number on Google, they call the O2 sensor an air fuel ratio sensor, but looking at the picture it's an O2 sensor.
Glad you got the problem fixed, hope the hazing didn't steer you away from this forum. It happens to just about every new guy unfortunately.
