I had a Rollbak retractable cover on my '05 Tundra DC. Here is my review.
The Good: Very good security, no way to open it if your tailgate is locked. Looks good (for awhile). Retractable design is very handy.
The Bad: I am pretty handy when it comes to do it yourself home and vehicle repairs. It took me 4 installations of this cover over a period of 2 months to get it close to working "normal." The cover rails come with shims to place between the bed rail and the cover rail. These proved to be a joke. There are no instructions as to where to place them. I used a level, measuring tape and plumb bob to get these rails perfectly level with the sliding part of the cover. The rails still rubbed the cover causing the powder coat to come off. Enough about installation. The cover rolls into this large plastic canister at the front of the truck and Bak industries says that the felt on the underside of the cover protects the top of the cover when it is rolled up. I went on a week long trip and had the cover rolled up the entire time. When I got and unrolled the cover the felt was sticking to the top of the cover and there were a few places where it rubbed the powder coat off. It looked like I needed to shave the thing. Also Bak industries touts their cover as very water repellant almost waterproof. I did not find that to be the case. Water leaked in where the tailgate met the cover and ran down the length of the be to the front of the truck. Quality was not a high priority either. The screws they sent to screw down the cover for the canister were black drywall screws, which promptly rusted. The rail left side rail was the one that held the cover closed or partially open depending on which setting you chose. This rail was mad of plastic and broke within 1 year of use. I glues the rail with Gorilla glue and it held until the metal latch pin started wearing a hole in the plastic rail. I called Bak Industries and they wanted $35 for another plastic rail. This should have been replaced because I believe it was a design flaw. You don't put a metal pin with all that pressure on it in constant contact with a plastic nub and not expect the plastic to wear out.
The worst: The absolute worst thing about this cover was in the winter when there was any moisture and it was below freezing the cover would not open. It would either freeze to the rails on both sides requiring me to pour hot water on it to get it to open or it would somehow freeze up inside the canister and would not unroll or roll up. In that case I had to park it inside a heated garage for an hour or so.

I contacted Bak Industries about some of my concerns, especially the freezing issue and they did not offer any advice as to how to fix the problem nor did they act like they cared. I have never been so disappointed with a purchase in my entire life. I felt like Bak Industries sold me a product that was not properly developed and once they did customer service was indifferent

I've just ordered my ARE LSII and am wondering if I should have picked up the Remote Lock option.

I think it's another $150 but is it worth it?

Anyone out there have one?
Did anyone order it afterward and install it themselves?

I'm putting the cover on my 2006 DC SR5.

thx

OK, the news today is....

Their current models are the G2 (aluminum) and the F1 (FRP - fiberglass reinforced plastic. Some say "polymer" instead of plastic.) If you want to know what FRP is like, you can go to Home Depot or Lowes, they sell sheets of it. FRP is pretty tough stuff, but how will it work with a tonneau cover? Don't know yet. Let's just hope that Bakflip's glue will hold to FRP (it didn't with the G1 and the non-aluminum G2's)

truck cover usa installed

i installed a new truck cover usa tonneau cover on my 06 dc today. by myself, install time was about and hour. to do it again would take about a half hour. i deleted a few steps (see below) which would have added to the install time. the install was very strait forward. fitment was excellent. instructions were easy to follow.

the quality of this bed cover is over the top. the cover installed over the factory bed liner without any modifications to the bed liner. the tie down loops on the front of the bed are still in place as they were not in the way of the canister. the fitment of this retractable bed cover was impeccable. while i know it is not water proof, i was amazed at how close the tolerances are around all the edges of the bed and the tailgate.

one thing i did not do was to hook up the drain tubing to the canister or the rails. i just couldn't bring myself to drill holes through my bed liner. if the bed takes on some water i'll park it on a slope and let it drain out the back end. or take off quickly. or open her up and let the sun dry it out. from the looks of everything, i just don't think that much water will get in though. i'll have to report back to this thread after i drive around in the rain. i can always install the drain tubes later if if change my mind. guess that's another reason to justify a set of bilstien adjustable 5100's to bring the front of the truck up a bit.:D

my only beef is that the instructions showed 8 clamps for the side rails and only 6 were shipped. there are four slots on each rail where the clamps attach. i feel confident that this will be taken care of without any drama. i'll keep everyone informed on how truck cover usa handles this issue.

am i glad i got this retractable bed cover? yes indeed!

would i recommend this retractable bed cover? yes indeed!
