I think the 4 liter is plenty for the fj which already sucks too much gas and hauls plenty of arse. A diesel v6 I would prefer.

el madmaster,

Agreed, I'd be right behind you with the check book for a diesel.

The FJ is built in Japan, and I don't think they have a V8 plant there. They'd have to freight in engines from the US for final assembly... The cost would be insanely high and I don't see it happening. I'm sure someone will come up with a kit to stuff one in there though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe my 2003 V8 4Runner was built in Japan.

You are correct. Because the 25% import tariff only applies to pickups, SUV's like 4Runners and FJ Cruisers are exempt. A V8 powered FJ would probably see mileage drop to 13/17. I would much prefer a turbo-diesel option myself.

Indeed. Anyone hear that the Hummer H3 is getting the 5.3 liter V8 for the alpha version? I'm not sure what this will do to gas mileage, but the thing is a pig, and the FJ's 4.0 will probably outrun the Hummer's 5.3 (4 spd auto only).

Also interesting - the hummer H2 is getting a 4.5 liter turbodiesel.

I for one, would jump on a V8 FJ in a second. This would wake up the moderately-performing FJ & mileage should not be much different. We don't drive FJ's to get high gas mileage anyway...
