For hauling kids & groceries go with the Xterra. The FJ is not an ideal off-roader, but comes closer than the Xterra for that chore.

Here is the straight skinny...

If you want a mall machine get a Toyota Highlander, preferably an older model before they made them ugly and lame. I just got my FJ and I have a very specific purpose in mind...off road!

The Nissan is garbage so stick with a Yota. You can find a really decent Highlander for around 10K used so that is my recommendation. I absolutely love mine, have taken down roads where Hummers will never go and have used the holy hell out of it. I would never ever ever regret buying another one since it is an awesome ride, is super comfortable and is great for passengers. If you want an awesome off road rig get the FJ...

Just my 2 cents.

absolutely, a highlander, or even a Rav4, as it can be had with the 3rd row seat option and does offer a nice v6, not a true 4x4, the VENZA just came out, its more car like but does have an AWD version as does the Matrix in AWD, the AWD Matrix will get the best mileage, has a camry engine,

for hauling kids, the FJ might not be ideal. My kids have their own cars, so I am past that.

The 4Runner is also an option, durable as heck.

my wife has a 2007 fj cruiser and I honestly say she loves the vehicle. I managed 1900 of sticker price. More than that they will try selling the ones without a roof rack or tire cover etc... you get the idea. As for the previous writer concerning premium fuel. we have been putting regular unleaded since the beginning and not everyone from what I've read require the premium stuff. We had the second year the nissan xterra came out and overall it has been satisfactory The new 2009 must be good but, as a person who watches out for recalls I can say the fj has been spotless so far. Good Luck....
