Has anyone tried to upgrade the stereo for the 2007 FJ Cruiser? I wish that it was available as a seperate option. I'm sure it sounds fine to most, but serious audiophiles would consider it lacking . Any advice out there?
Also, does anyone know if the face plate is a standard double DIN?
My FJ is on order and should be here 4/20 ...I'm just doing some initial research so that I can get the parts list together for my stereo installers.
I'm happy with the factory system. An audiophile isnt going to hear the difference in sound qaulity at any speed. Road noise can never be overcome IMO. If you are out to customize that different, show us the photos when its done.
I too am happy with the my factory system. I have the Package 2 in my car. I am very picky about my car audio but I actually like this factory sound. As far as a custom stereo installation, I considered it until I saw what I was dealing with. The car has no space to hide any monster cables or amps unless you do a expensive custom job. You have to consider that there is no carpet to hide the cables. Then again, anything is possible if the price is right. I saw this FJ online and thought that I would share it with you.
i drove one today and measured the radio opening. it looks like it is exactly that same size as my tundra which i installed a factory nav unit. so if the wiring is good in the uint should fit. anyone have pics of the back of the factory fj radio to compare?
I just purchased a FJ and was dissapointed in the Audio. I first Had the Alpine double din Head unit installed with the Alpine DVD navigation. I also had the back-up camera installed. The next step will be to add the rear pillar speakers & a sub. I want to maintain a clean factory look. I am getting happier by the day.
I checked out the stereo in an FJ today with the factory upgraded 6-disk changer, and subwoofer. This stereo is one of the weakest areas of the FJ, with sound that is flat with little definition, and I'm not even that much of an automobile audiophile (given the background noise level). I test drove two other competitive trucks today, and both had factory stereos that blew it out of the water. You'll be able to make huge improvements with a good aftermarket system in the FJ, without too much effort.
I have a Black M/T 4x4, Option Package 2, and the sub was definitly lacking. I took it to the stereo shop the next day and had a 4 channel Amp, and an Infinity 12" Sub installed.
Ran the Amp to the front (2 Channels) for the doors and combined two channels for the Sub. Now it sounds much better, and the factory front door speakers appear to handle the power from the amp with no distortion. High highs, lacking a little mid, but much bass from the 12" Infinity Sub. 100% improvement as I like my music clean and loud with a big bump.

How about some pictures? Like to see how you mounted the sub.
According to Crutchfield, the head unit is Double DIN, 6x9s in the front doors. It appears to have speakers in the front dash. If so, I believe these are 4" speakers and most brands have a 4"T speaker replacement for Toyotas. My Titanium FJ should be here by June 23rd, can't wait. I got the standard 6 speaker stereo, but plan to replace everything. Does anyone know if you can mount speakers in the back pillars without any modifications to the FJ?
