FJ CruiserGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota FJ Cruiser.
This is a discussion thread titled "FJ Mileage and overall impressions", within the FJ Cruiser forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I saw this thread in Tundra. I was curious about what kind of mileage FJ owners were experiencing across the country and their overall impressions on their choice of FJ.
I have had my FJ just short of 4 weeks.
6-speed 4X;
1500KM total travelled and
averaging 320KM per tank (full to the top), I will attemp to run empty this week.
I have loved every minute of the ride. Only one concern of a leaky windshield seal, turns out it was condensation collecting in the hood liner pre-delivery. Has not occured since.
I'm just about to hit 2000 kms and seem to be getting about bang on 20 mpg combined (not as much sitting in traffic round these parts). I have installed a K&N filter, and don't know if it's a psychological thing, but the engine seems to have a little more push lower down in the rev range (could also be the engine is freeing up as well)
I suppose our norther neighbors know what they're speaking of but I don't. If the "bottom quarter" of the tank holds 25 liters wouldn't the other 1/4's also hold 25 liters?
12 liters/100Km= 19.6 mpg(US) or 23.5(UK). The other writer claims 20 mpg but does not state US or UK. 20 mpg (UK) is 16.65 mpg(US). One FJ(or driver) gets better mileage than the other. I had help from this site...http://www.onlineconversion.com/fuel_consumption.htm
Ya'll feel free to critize. I was just curious.
My personal experience is that the bottom tank has less than 25 L. From the time the fuel light and run near dry, I guestimate 12 L or less; based on total distance travelled after the fuel light comes on (city driving). This may be more on the highway, but I can't see being much more.
I've notice as the engine has reach now 2600km, its seems to like the fuel more and more.

Just seemed like the gauge was not linear. The mileage is still bang on 12 liters per 100 Kms. Not bad for a 4200lb vehicle.
No. That's great mileage. This is what confused me. I was thinking "tank" when the reference was to the "gauge". the top of the tank is very small. The bottom quarter has about 25 liters in it.
My Tundra got a boost in mileage after hitting 6000 total miles. I got 19.9 on the last tank. It's the lighter standard cab, though.
I've had the VooDooBlue Rig, 1 month 13 days and about 10 hours. It now has a whopping 715 miles, the mileage on the Dealer tank was 18.65 mpg, the next two popped in at 19.12 and 19.78. Some of the driving in town, some in the Boonies. Very Very Pleased with the Car, it is turning out to be everything I had hoped it would be. I've not taken it in the challenging places yet but fully expect it to do outrageous.
A Pleasant VooDooBlue to You
Chet

The Turbodog II now has about 14K miles on it after buying in August 2006. At first, I got 14-17 mpg, which aggravated me. After about 10,000 miles, it got a little better. I actually got 20 mpg on a tank, going 60 mph on a long road to Monroe. It now averages about 15-18 mpg at usual conditions. Yesterday i got 16 miles after the gas light came on before I got to the station. i was sweating it, but it still had some gas left in the tank.
I have had my FJ for nine months, 13000 +/- miles, it gets 17 to 19 mpg. I have run K&N air filters and when pen meet paper there is no sig difference. Those products never live up to the hype, but yes I still put them on.
I live in houston so much of my driving is hwy, but even on a long hwy run I don't see a sig difference. If you have to pull a trailer get ready to really see your mpg go to crap. Through this past Duck season I ran about a 140 mile round trip out to lease and home and I was lucky to get 11-13. Granted 4 am, empty toll roads and generally running late meant running a little faster but we are talking about a 10 foot trailer with a 700cc 4 wheeler total of maybe 900 pounds of gear.
Overall, I buy a new truck about every two years, with GMC that is about as long as you can drive before all the rattles start to drive you crazy. This has been ok but I don't think it will make it another 15 months. I like being able to put a wet dogs in the back and it wipes out easy and no odors linger, but outside of that it is just two small and without a trailer you can barely bring enough gear for two guys and a dog. I am ready to go back to a full size truck as soon as they get this low sulpher stuff figured out.
I can say that we had a very wet season with lots of muddy conditions and I never got even close to stuck. I think my guy at the office are glad that we are not in hunting season as I am not bringing in a truck monday mornings covered in dirt/mud for them to clean.
I haven't updated my spreadsheet for about 6000 km now, though I have all of the records waiting to be organized. However, I'm getting about 460-480 km before the light comes on (automatic tranny) with highway driving. Then it takes about 55-56 litres, which means there are 16 litres still in the tank when the light comes on.
I drove to the cottage today, keeping it under 105 km/h, and the gauge shows a little over 1/4 tank used for 234 km. I have 12400 km on the FJ to date. And the weird thing: gas is cheaper up here than it was at home! Makes no sense.
