Ok, my FJ ain't perfect....the bumpers need to changed, it needs to be lifted, blah, blah, blah. I can't afford those things right now but would love to take this off-road. Unfortunately, it also came with the worst wheels and tires possible. I can't afford to change the lame 17" wheels, but I can change the tires...can anyone suggest a low budget alternative to these suicide, Dunlop Grandtreks? These don't even handle well on the pavement!
I won't be rock crawling or mud slinging, but would like to have some peace of mind if I go on some basic trails as well as a comfy ride on the street. I don't want to spend more than $500.
I don't like the tires or wheels either. I am ordering mine this week without the upgraded wheels and putting some on like this. I think they look pretty tough on the new fj's http://www.americanracing.com/wheels...lloy§ion=S
There are a lot of tire choices, but to help your budget, take your FJ into a Discount/Americas Tire and they should gice you trade in on your slightly used tires!

I like those a lot. The ones in the "Mojave" style Teflon is what I want, with a set of Firestone Destination MT's on 'em. What do the wheels cost, by the way?
217.00 a piece which is cheaper I believe then the factory alloys. I saw on e with similar wheels and it looked pretty sick. Every one has the shiny/ alloy wheels
i switched my tired out for BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A's 285 70 17's. I traded the tires in that were originally on the fj and walked out of the place spending $865 and that is with five tires!! although i did shop around for the place to give me the most for the trade in.
looks way ****in better though,,,definitely worth it.

That fj would look great with BF Goodrich 285/75/16
on MT classic II with 3.5 backspacing, let it rub till you can lift it.
I noticed the fj is begging to have wider tires like a jeep.

How'd you go about finding a tire shop that would do trade ins?

i literally called about 30 places. i found plenty of people that would do it but they were ripping me off. also it was the day after i bought the car so the tires had barely any miles on them whatsoever. i just told the technician that i wanted to leave spending less than 900 for all five tires and he made it happen. i believe it was at "discount tires" you can't go to a big place like walmart or anything they will not trade.
