Check Engine Light warning - Gas Cap - Toyota Tundra Forums : Tundra Solutions Forum

I had my check engine light come on yesterday. Took it to the dealer today and they said it was caused by the locking gas cap I put on. They said that if the cap is not tight or if you overfill the gas tank, the check engine light will come on. Apparently, the aftermarket locking gas caps do not provide an adequate seal and will cause the check engine light to come on which the dealer's service dept. may have to reset. They told me to put the original Toyota gas cap back on and drive 3 cycles of 4 miles to see if it will reset the light by itself. Toyota does not make genuine Toyota locking caps but their parts dept. sells the "Stant" brand locking gas caps which I was using. According to them, this is a known problem. Anyone else had this problem?

It's true. If the gas cap isn't on properly the check engine light will come on. I've had it happen on a number of new cars.

We sell STANT locking gas caps. My dad has had one on his 2005 Tundra DC since week 1 and has no problems.
He also has one on his 2006 Prius.
According to STANT they do not make a locking gas cap yet for the FJ.
What part number did they sell you? It may not be for the FJ even tho it fits.
EVAP SYSTEMS are very critical anymore and everything has to seal and perform as designed by toyota.

this is a common problem on all makes and models. Most makes will reset themselfs after so many engine on and off cycles or unhooking battery for awhile. I have had this problem with stock fuel caps aswhile. I drive a frod company vehilce. It just started it at 98,000 miles, took it in and they said it was gas cap. The company I work for didn't replace it, I now have 110,000 on the vehicle, just covered the light with black electrical tape.
