big fan of your account name "buckfever4life" the main reason I got the fj was for hunting season. So far through two weekends of bird hunting, opening dove, opening teal, the fj has been fun. I do miss my big truck, '04 GMC SLT 3/4 ton crew cab, but being able to throw the dog in the truck has been nice. I have to pull my 4 wheeler on a trailer but I would usually do that anyway. It has been nice not caring about the leather or getting mud all over the interior. Now I get home and after I spray down the wheeler, I spray down the mats and Mon I am back ready for work.

Opening Bow season 3 weeks away!

Default Latest Mileage Figures

Sunday I headed home with my FJ packed to the roof with my equipment, and I towed a 6x8 steel trailer with a half cord of firewood, with the 5 foot trailer ramp sticking straight up, (kept me from running too fast!) Still running 87 octane.
54 litres used in the last 403 km. (mixed driving)
13.4L/100 km, or 21.08 mpg, Canadian.
Overall, for the first 911 km:
12.40 L/100km, or 22.77 mpg Cdn, or 18.96 mpg US gal.
Cost-wise:
911 km cost $99.36, all low test
Breakin is just about done. I expect some decent mileage when running empty on the highway. The road gearing is good for mileage: in od with my automatic, 70 mph is still just under 2000 rpm.

The FJ isn't designed to be a family car (thankfully). If it was, it would have had four real doors.

Go buy a used car, and manage your money better.

You're not a really happy person are you Michael?

I've already addressed the gas question. You're a little late. What I decide to buy my small (two small kids) family is my business. Do you really think I'm going to buy another vehicle just because you came in this thread and told me not to? I listen to those that have something positive to say and I ignore the opinions of those that come on this site just to spread hate and insult others. By your response I can tell you're a young angry boy that has yet to learn how to be constructive with his words. You have not matured enough yet in life to know the complexities of raising a family and how something as simple as buying premium gas can tip the balance between buying a car or not. It's not as simple as being able to afford it, rather, whether or not you choose as a father to use that extra expense for your own enjoyment. One day if you're lucky enough to be a father yourself, you might (and that's a stretch) come to understand what I'm talking about. Your kids become the most important thing in your life and you self-impose justification of everything you spend on yourself. I can afford to buy three of these FJ's right now but I don't because I love my children more then my own self-interests. Don't tell a father what to do because unless you can truly place yourself in his shoes...keep your mouth shut.

You come on here with guns blazing, with a big headline for everyone to see "toyota blew it", all because the engine runs on premium, then tell others to "keep your mouth shut", and I'm the immature one??? Yes, and you have so much "positive" to say that you wouldn't even read your own posts. Oh, good, we have a teenage parent telling everyone how mature he is. A mature person doesn't buy toys that push his finances to the brink just because the fuel tank requires premium instead on regular. Instant gratification typifies childish behavior. Don't give me the "kids are the most important thing" speech. You don't put your kids first. You put your narcissistic self first, or you wouldn't be on here crying about how you can't afford the FJ because your fuel cost is going to be $14.70 a month more. Give us a break with that nonsense!

By the way, let us know how much money you've saved after your ring lands are pounded down by detonation, and your are valves coked, on your cheap gas. My guess, though, is you will be onto your next "look at me everyone" toy you can't afford before those repairs ring in.

a while back i got a chip for the tundra. the chip was tuned on the A map for regular, B map for midgrade, but the B map could be run with regular...if the engine retarded the timing due to the B map being too aggressive, either we switched back to the A map or ran midgrade. I never had a problem with detonation running either map with regular.

About a year ago i did some mileage calculations with regular and midgrade, since the chip was specifically tuned with midgrade on the B map to take advantage of the more aggressive timing possible with a higher octane. I did get slightly better mileage in town, and calculated the break-even point around 2.50 a gallon for regular...over 2.50 and it was cheaper to use midgrade, under then use regular, and at 2.50/USGAL it didn't matter. recently, i did some checking with regular and midgrade on the B map on the highway, and got almost 18mpg with two passengers, a full bed, 35" tires and stock gearing at near-constant 75mph for about 150 miles...normally i was getting almost 16 on the highway, all by myself with no load at the same speed. with a difference per tank of 2.60 total, i have since switched exclusively to midgrade for the range and efficiency. i suspect the difference in price per tank is even less on the fj...i have roughly a 26 gallon tank.

it is worth running the numbers to see how or if the octane level affects your mileage with your driving style. the truck will get the best mileage using the octane level for which it was designed...above that octane you won't see an improvement, and below that octane the ecu may retard timing. like somebody said earlier tho make sure the octane you think you need is the same as the octane specified by the manufacturer...there are three different scales. there is a thread in the general engine/drivetrain forum on this subject right now.
