The Tundra paint appears to be of a higher quality (when viewing side-by-side), so I am hoping this is a model-specific problem.
Hey guys. I'm just finding out about these details. I have a 2008 silver FJ Cruiser, and I have to admit that I also, in the first three months of owning it, found several chips on the paint. The dealer also told me it was because of the trip I make every morning to work, but I also explained it had never happened with my other cars. So they pretty much got rid of any responsibility. They even offered me that they could use some kind of brush to repaint the chips (special brush and original silver paint), and that would be on very low cost. Do you think Toyota will ever issue a recall regarding the paint problems?
Also, regarding the windshields, it is unbelievable, that only one month after driving it, my winsdhield got a little crack, and then in one more month, two more cracks, so I went to the dealer and had it replaced. I paid only 20% of the insurance policy, so it was not bad. After having my new windshield, 2 other cracks have appeared, and so this time I am going to wait at least for other 5 cracks, so I won't spend so much time having it fixed. Is this a problem of engineering? Is the glass of the windshield too thin? I would expect it to be thick, specially if the truck has 100% off road capabilitities and specifications.
Other than those, is the C pole, which is annoying at first, but you just got to get used to it, and after that, you use the other 'can't see' features.
The nature of this beast. Road chips just happen. Get yourself a $6 bottle of OE Toyota Touch up paint...Just bring the color code # to your dealers parts dept.. Or the chips will just rust out down the road at some point. The windshield seems to be a Flawed design in materials if yu ask me. Many FJ owners have vented on this . Google it.
Since the winshield is very much vertical and, due to the Drag coef. design of this body style, Toyota should have created a Harder and more appropriate glass. Period. Not a hard fix, but Toyota would only update this on a later gen FJ.
FYI,I would check into other aftermarket brands of windshields. Some FJ owners having been through several windshields already have discovered some better grades of Non-Toyota brand glass after their glass coverage would not completely reimburse for OE winshields after several claims were made in a short term.
Try one of those ugly looking Bug Deflectors. Some say they reduced the chances of chipped glass.
Yu are not alone.

well went through arbitration and they did nothing. toyota won't step up to the plate and say that they are FALSE advertising with the "antichip paint". They will say yes they are rock chip or road debris but the fact is that the paint is crap. Also they fail to tell you that the blue and the yellow paint has no I said NO clear coat which makes it softer yet. They said that it was just a design flaw that is why so many chips are happening. We have a 95 white 4 runner and it has 2 chips. Also it has 140,000 miles. Seems as if their customer relations has gone to the wayside

This is sad to see as I am in the market for an FJ. I have an 04 Tundra DoubleCab and an 07 Sequoia that have only suffered minor (normal) chips, especially for living on a gravel road. Hopefully this thread will stay alive to see if the issue improves. I would also expect that having the running boards would help, any thoughts???
I have the same problem with paint chipping. I happened to be at the dealer for an oil change and two more FJ Cruisers were in the shop - all three had chips - two were vodoo blue and one was bacl. Mine is vodoo blue but this problem isn't only on the blue. The black was equally as bad. This is beyond the typical stones on the road problem. My dealer was not responsive at all about the problem. The owner of one of the FJ Cruisers there told me to go on line to find the numerous complaints. TOYOTA should have a recall and/or compensate FJ owners. Has anybody heard from TOYOTA on the issue?
I dont have the FJ, I instead have a DC Tundra. BUT...I have the same complaint. Chips all over the hood and inside the doors. If you lean against the fender with a cotton shirt on, it too scratches the H$LL outta the paint. Im VERY disappointed with the paint on an otherwise PERFECT $43,000 truck.

Sorry to hear about this. I came to the FJ forum because I'm thinking of trading my 05 Tacoma in for an 09 FJ. I dealt with the paint problem on my Tacoma--had to have the truck repainted after 5 weeks--and don't want to have to deal with it again. So much for the FJ.
I want to take fifty or a hundred of my U.S. army students to the dealership and fill there sales lobby with my little army and tell them they can't sell any cars till they fix my ****ed up chipping paint.

Unfortunately, the newer water based paint that the manufacturers are now using is not as durable as the older solvent based paints!
Maybe true in some cases, but other manufactures paint like Mercedes and Audi clearcoat is incredibly hard and chip resistant. Therefore, Toyota hasn't done their homework.
Anyone know if this paint issue has been fixed in the 09 fj? I am really interested in getting one but paint chips would really suck on a brand new vehicle
Several things about the FJ seem to be far from perfect, the paint chips easily, the plastic liners in the cargo area will scuff badly if anything is hauled there, the roof rack looks great but is next to useless; I added several extra crossbars on mine & improved that a bit. Perhaps the worst thing about the FJ is it's terrible windshield glass, it will chip itsself to pieces is a short time. I am on my second & already have 2 nice chips in it. If Toyota chooses to ignore these defects, I will ignore Toyota next time I buy.....
My friend's Black Cherry 07 FJ is chipping bad too....Rocker panels, around the wheels, inside the door and tailgate, and, get this...THE FREAKIN ROOF RACK!!Not to mention the windshield that has 6 small cracks...The guy lives in the downtown core,he travels only paved roads for 95% of his trips, and he hauls a camper that is colormatched to his FJ and not one paint chip on the trailer.
He's taken it to his dealership and said they were aware of the problem, but that the corporate office denied it completely...They (his dealership) are offering him a new paint job at 25% of the cost,so 75% off.
They said they didn't have to,but since he purchased many vehicles from that same dealer in the past, they were doing it as a courtesy....
In looking at the problem on the net it seems that TOYOTA CANADA seems to be a little more dilligent in their customer service than in the states.....
I'll keep you updated after the new paint job....
