Now my plan is to invest in a better air filter from K&N when they decide to get off their rears and put out some products for the 07 Tundra. Maybe I am just naieve on the subject but I dont see the logic in investing $300 into something that is already there. PLease advise.
You're correct in that the stock intake is already a cool air intake, because it pulls air from the fender. The money in the aftermarket intakes is usually for flow optimization which reduces pumping losses. The air flow in the stock intake has more impedance than an aftermarket intake and filter. Some of this impedance can be removed by an aftermarket filter, but the air flow still has to make a couple more 90 degree turns before it gets to the engine. The Airaid I have, for example, draws air radially through an oval filter and straight to the throttle body, where the stock intake has to pull air through the hole in the fender, up through the filter and turn in to the intake tube to the throttle body. In the case of the Tundra, they did a good job designing the stock intake due to its large volume and close proximity to the engine.

I'm starting to think I may just re-install the stock airbox and install and aftermarket filter. That, or spring for the Volant...

The difference with the aftermarket intake is the intake tube size. It may seem very similar to the stock but it flows better. The filter has alot to do with it as well. Changing just the filter may help some but a true CAI is designed to be used with its own filter. Run the 1/4 mile all you want but the proof is on the dyno.

Maybe the CAI improved the top end but took out a little power at lower rpms, so in the end they came out even? Were you fender to fender all the way, or did the stock truck sneak quicker off the line and the CAI just catch up through the traps?

Back in the TBI Chev era, you could put a 454 TBI on a 350 and although the top end was much better, the larger plate definitely softened the low end torque, both properly tuned. It was pronounced enough that the truck with the bigger plate lost off the line what it gained on top. The quarter mile time was almost the same.

It was fender to fender untill the very end when he started and I started to get an edge. His truck was starting to pull, but it was a very slow pull and would probably take 1/2 mile or more to get a full truck length.

Dyno smyno. You can look at the numbers and claims all you want, but seeing it in person???? It's not the type of drastic change you would expect. Might look good on paper, but that's about it.

We took it off tonight and he is returning it.

Let us know how the install goes. I ordered the kit for my 2006 4Runner SE and there were a few fitment issues. Hopefully Volant has adressed those issues and it won't carry over to the kits for the Tundras.

Default Re: 2007 tundra cold air intake?

I got an offer to try the same thing with a aFe instead of the Volant on my truck and run them against my buddy's Volant. However, my buddy removed his Volant and is sending it back. Both trucks have stock exhaust, so maybe the exhaust combination might produce a bit more and be what your looking for.

I'm considering running the aFe on mine and see how it performs on the drag. Since I won't have the Volant to compare it with, I figured I would run the truck stock first, then with the aFe installed if it's not to hard an install and see if it runs better than the Volant. The Volant was not that hard an install.

The gentleman making this offer to me is stating the Volant had a paper filter for maximum protection and primarily built for Diesel trucks. Maybe he will chime in on this discussion. I'm still skeptical though.

I am a beliver in performance that is exhaust based and plan on doing this to mine soon, but these cold air intakes are a bit dicey in my opinion.

Also, the Volant was not that noisy. You could tell it was there, but nothing drastic. I heard the aFe's are very noisy, but again, just second hand info.

You're talking about the Volant for the 5.7 Tundra, right?

Yea, sorry if that was not obvious enough. Everything above is regarding the 5.7L Tundra
