This is a discussion thread titled "Doug Thorley 5.7L Headers", within the Forced Induction Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hey guys whats up! I'm putting my DT headers on this weekend with a local Toyota Tech at his place. Any tips would be appreciated. I already bought new header gaskets and AI Tube gaskets just to be safe.
On the directions it says Hi Temp gasket maker... whats that for?
Thanks
Alan

Sounds like they want a little silicone on both sides of the gasket before you install it. Use the sensor safe copper Permatex stuff, which is meant for the high temperatures, and spread it on very thin. Wait 10-15 minutes for it to "skin" or partially dry before you install.
Are those Toyota OEM gaskets? I would guess an OEM gasket would specify a dry install (no silicone) but I suppose it can't hurt.

What about the 4.7 engine? It is still a pretty fair choice for some of us and if it had a little more bottom end it would be even nicer. Are they avaible with a high tech coating instead of chrome or SS.? Thanks
When I installed mine I used the OEM gaskets and no additives; make sure they put the nuts on the middle top studs first! I did not know/do that on mine, I was the first one to install them myself and passed on my lessons learned to DT.

Alright thanks. Yeah I did buy all OEM Toyota stuff. Local dealer wanted 220 for everything. Bought it from TRDPARTS4U.com for 76 for everything. Local dealer said there cost was even way higher than that.

My last set of DT headers said to use high temp rtv..no way! are you kidding? Nothing can survive the exhuast temps of modern cars except metallic or asbestos like gaskets.

Help me understand this please:
While I TOTALLY understand your choice and not "needing" the 5.7......why now do you want to boost performance at what'll end up being just a few hundred $$$ less than what a 5.7 would have been in the first place?? (could've got a "free" 6 speed in the bargain with the 5.7 also)

DO NOT USE RTV!! It is not needed and can potentially damage O2 sensors. We reuse the factory gaskets on our headers as they are the best and e wont mess with that!

Let me tell you what! I am finding in the TOYOTA world, that there is a great divide in pricing from one dealer to another. When I went to the parts counter at my local AUTOWAY dealer and asked for gaskets for my header installation (manifold and down pipe gaskets), the first price I got was 149.00 bucks, then I said come on give me the family member price brother, then BOOM ..100.00 bucks out the door! Bottom line, negotiate!

I didn't, they are fine.
Why on earth would anyone put rtv on an exhaust gasket? If the mating surfaces are properly finished and the gaskets are the oem stacked ss metal kind, the seal will be superior to anything else. The oem gaskets have "spring" to them giving a positive seal through having the ability to rebound from compression. The composite ones on the other hand will squash and stay squashed once tightened down i.e. they will not hold a positive seal. There should be no difference in gasket requirements from the oem manifolds to the DT headers, as the sealing surfaces are similar. If DT tells you to use RTV, they are trying to compensate for lack of surface finish quality on their headers. RTV on any exhaust component is always to be considered a "bandaid".

OK guys, it's been over a month since the last post. There were 3 owners who had ordered the DT headers and were going to install them. Update please. I don't care about pics. Difficulty, problems encountered, fitment, stuck/broken bolts, gaskets, the works.
I am sorely tempted to buy a set of these DT headers and need the aforementioned information. Thank you one and all...
