This is a discussion thread titled "Exhaust Recommendations", within the Forced Induction Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hello everyone. New to this site and just purchased my first yoda about a month ago. All I can say is Wow! I really love my new truck. I’ve been wanting to make a few improvements on it and would like some recommendations. I am looking to put in a new exhaust system. I don’t want anything too loud (like a Flowmaster) but looking for something that will improve performance with a nice deep sound. I know that these trucks already came with an excellent muffler so I definitely don’t want to down grade. I was thinking of something like a Gibson or Magnaflow. Has anyone here on this site changed out their exhaust yet? How did it work out? Thanks in advance.
This site has a GREAT search function. There are all kinds of threads with all kinds of info and photos. Do a search and 99% of your questions will be answered.
There has to be almost a dozen threads on exhaust in here. There are even sound bites, so you can listen to them. Search on "exhaust", "cat", and by brand names like Borla, Flowmaster, TRD, etc.etc.
I personally went with the Borla and couldn't be happier. I did a ton of research on here and on youtube. Here are couple links to sound clips and videos that have been posted on here. Good luck!
The first one is of a Borla exhaust, which I went with, got it from Sparks Toyota for $814 plus install of a $100
thanks everyone....been looking at previous posts but can't make up my mind. Definately not a Gibson. Has anyone run a diagnostic to see if the Borla, TRD or Magnaflow actually improve performance?
word to the wise, to save yourself a lot of money, drive what you are going to buy, in this case, make every effort to find someone with that item on there truck, what you here on sound bite, maybe worlds different than what you are willing to live with day to day. do your home work and most likely you will pass the course.

Having gone the expensive way with my Tacoma (Complete Stainless ca-back system) I went cheep on my Tundra. I did the FLOWMASTER, the feared noise maker, no way the FM 70 series 2.5 in 3.o out is just what I needed a very low rumble and a freed-up exhaust flow. The shop that installed it re-bent my drivers side pipe, added a short extension at the out let, and presto $75 installation charge. Factory pipes on this Tundra are just fine when it comes to material and size, why change them. The FM 75 series is something you should look at, you can call them good tech support.
Tell you now, rethink the "cold air system" , other than changing out the air filter type, from paper to an aftermarket, I'm leaving my system alone , it's just as good as anything out there, MY OPINION. Enjoy you ride I enjoy mine.
I love the Borla on my truck. It sounds great, has a very SLIGHT drone at 62 mph that can be overcome by just opening up the window, turning on the AC, or turning on the radio.

DB3, This is probably the best advise, find someone in your area and listen too, drive or ride in if possible.

im in the same situation, with regards of modding the exhaust on the Tundra.
Ive been searching, researching, reading and etc.
After everything is said and done, this is what im doing.
Flowmaster 70 Dual In/Dual Out, custom fabbed by exhaust shop with
chrome tips coming out under the rear bumper like the Borla..
Parts, labor, install, tips and tax's. Everything out the door $475.
WHY??
From what I have read, exhaust mod is relatively just for Sounds, because of
minimal performance gain. So why spend so much $$$??
Wanted something quiet stock like when creeeping around, but mean sounding
when under load.
70 flowmaster is allegedly quietest, but with dual in/dual out makes it louder,
and is most drone resistant.
But what really clinched me was when someone said.
"with minimal performance gain, and basically for sound. With the money you save
from buying a Borla or TRD(heard bad things of TRD) buy other goodies.
WHICH I AM. like Leveling kit and install.
I have messes with my Tundra's exhaust alot. First I went with a Magnaflow muffler with dual 3 inch tips. The muffler itsself freed up air flow and I noticed it everytime I touched the gas. And the sound was there versus stock but it was a quiet rumble. The size of the tips are the key factor as the depth of the sound is varied based on the size of the tips. The mistake I made with the Magnaflow was I left the resonator on. With is pretty much a secondary muffler so replacing the muffler itsself didn't do much. In the end I finally pulled everything from the cat's back. I went to a garage my friend ran and he suggested to replace all the tubing with factory size tubes and run a single y-pipe setup from the cat's back. Being sure the resonator came out this time, I chose the Flowmaster 40 series with dual 4 inch tips. The first time that truck started right out of the garage it scared us all. The exhaust note was very deep and vibrated the ground. And anytime the throttle opened up the truck roared at you. And occasionally I'll hear a loud popping from the tips as the Flowmaster rushes air through them
