Forced Induction SystemsDetailed discussions regarding cold-air intake systens, superchargers, turbo chargers, and other induction systems for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Crcked Exhaust Manifold", within the Forced Induction Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Just got my manifolds changed, the O2 sensor was out and they did both sensors and the manifolds. They said the manifolds were prone to failure and that causes the O2 failures. I was told that new updated design manifolds were put on under the extended O2 warranty (7yrs or 90K miles)
I also have a 2000 V8 with 122k miles and noisy valves. It started at around 80k miles. I can hear it mostly while accelerating with the windows open, but it isn't noticeable while cruising. My mechanic checked it out and said it was the exhaust manifold gaskets. He said it is expensive to fix and recommended I don't bother to spend the money unless it gets unbearable. It hasn't gotten much worse since it started and I haven't had any problem yet.
mine ticks pretty bad, it has done it since the day i bought it. its not really annoying but knowing that i can have it replaced under warranty up to 80k miles is good in case it does get worse.
Only reason its so unbearable is because your steering shaft boot is probably torn. My makes that same noise and ive had my exhaust manifold changed but it still makes that noise. Figured out it was normal engine noise and my steering shaft boot was just torn letting all that engine noise in. I replaced my steering shaft boot which took about 15 mins and now I hear absolutely no engine noise.
Maybe a CV boot or something. I saw you had this problem in another thread. Maybe try to custom fabricate a cv boot because they are much larger than the standard steering shaft boot. Ill see what I can come up with.
From what I've found... The cheapest fix for cracked exhaust manifolds is to fix them. Yes, a good machine shop can weld the weak area around the flange without damaging the manifold. I had my passenger side fixed. I paid $220 to have it removed, fixed and replaced. Oh I paid extra for new Toyota gaskets. Onced welded they shouldn't fail again.
The headers were tempting but this way was cheaper.
Mine cracked two days after I bought the truck and cost $1,700 to replace. The dealer went haves with me though. Checked with toyota then and they are covered under the powertrain warranty of 5years or 60 thousand miles if I remember correctly. I wanted headers then but didn't have the bucks. Sorry it happened to yet another person.
