This is a discussion thread titled "Crcked Exhaust Manifold", within the Forced Induction Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Ive had a ticking under the hood of the driver's side for quite some time now. It is very loud and you can hear it while driving. Im assuming from reading other posts that it is a cracked exhaust manifold. Anyone have anything that would help me out. does anyone know how much they typically cost to fix?

Maybe you'll be lucky, and you just need to move the ground wire. Check out Larry's post at the end of this thread...

If it is a cracked manifold DONT replace it. Get headers which will cost the same or less and you will get a boost in horsepower and mileage. I own a dozen trucks for work and whenever there is a manifold problem we put on headers.
Make sure it is cracked before you buy new headers. It could be your steering shaft is torn which is allowing engine in which can sound like ticking. I just changed to JBA headers and I still hear what I thought was ticking and it turned out to be engine noise that was just let in by a torn steering shaft boot.
What is the mileage and years on exhaust that warranty covers? I have the exact same sound. I thought was valve tapping but now think is exhaust. The sound is very loud when cold and decreases as vehicle warms (expansion of metal?) and gets loud any time accelerate. I have a 2000 v-8 with 80,000 miles.
I just changed the headers because I thought I had the same "ticking noise". Before you buy anything, buy a mechanical stethoscope and listen around for ticking noises. That should help you. Maybe if you take it to a GOOD muffler shop they might be able to help you find out what it is. For me, it wasnt the exhaust manifold because i changed to headers and I still had the noise.

I bet it's the torn steering shaft gasket... $15 part... based on it's age. Crawl under your drivers side firewall, and look up the steering shaft... takes 10 seconds to verify.

My truck has the same mileage and does the exact same thing. The noise is kinda like a ft-ft-ft-ft-ft sound that follows rpm of the engine. I changed plugs thinking it was a loose plug. Well I found a loose plug but the noise is still there. Also it rained and was real windy last night and it made the noise for along time today. Of course by the time i had driven 20 miles to the dealership it was running smooth again. I think I'm gonna have to leave at the dealer overnight so they can hear it cold and tell me whats wrong. I'll keep y'all posted.

[quote=RitcheyRch;798199]I didnt remember the mileage part of the warranty. My exhaust manifolds were replaced under this warranty a few years back.
Thats just what i have been told by my exhaust shop when i was asking about cost on replacing manifolds, they said it would be under warranty if mileage was under 80k. Talked to a dealership and they said they same thing.
Just got my manifolds changed, the O2 sensor was out and they did both sensors and the manifolds. They said the manifolds were prone to failure and that causes the O2 failures. I was told that new updated design manifolds were put on under the extended O2 warranty (7yrs or 90K miles)
