Forced Induction SystemsDetailed discussions regarding cold-air intake systens, superchargers, turbo chargers, and other induction systems for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Air intake Question", within the Forced Induction Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have the K&N drop in filter and Helix throttle body spacer. I’m not sure if I notice that much of a HP increase. So should I take off these modifications that were put on when I received the truck and install an intake system? If so, which brand of intake system? Some of the reviews that I read said that the Throttle body spacer was a waste along with the drop in performance filter. I want one that will give me the most HP for the money. I emailed K&N and asked them if I’d have to remove my Helix throttle body spacer to install the FIPK intake system and of course they said yes.

Helix is a total waist of money. and as for the FIPK, I had one and it ruined my MAF sensor, the oil you put on it ruins the MAF. I did enjoy it while it lasted though. better throttle response and sounded pretty cool too. Ofcourse if you go extremely easy on the oil I bet you could get away with it.

what he said.
as for the throttle body spacer, from what i have heard, all it does is move the powerband up. it's nice if you spend a lot of time drag racing, but if you tow, you are actually losing power at the low end.

The AEM Bruit Force CAI uses a rather large synthetic filter, easy to clean, just wash it, and no oil to screw up the MAF. I love mine, but I've got the other stuff to go with it for the HP, TQ & MPG.
Will be getting 50K service this week, and I have had no problems with my dealer's service dept. They like to see what I've done since the last visit, and of course they test drive it.

I will agree the Helix is a waste of money. However the oil on a K+N type filter does not ruin the MAF. A fine coating can form, but is easily cleaned off. A properly oiled K+N filter for example will not harm the MAF, been running one for 200,000 mi, serviced every 50,000 and still have the original MAF. I clean the MAF every 20,000 mi with MAF cleaner spray available at the local auto parts store (takes about 5 min to do, real easy). There are a number of posts on cleaning a MAF. An over-oiled filter can cause grief as the MAF will get coated quickly and not work properly, but is is easily cleaned as mentioned. The trick is to carefully follow the oiling instructions that come with the filter, more is not better in this case.
The stock intake is good, however has a restriction that is easily fixed see the post on the "Engine and Drivetrain" forum called "Stock Airflow Numbers and Mod".
ya stock is the best i know of. my friend and i would race, mine stock, his had k&n.we would also switch with same results. i would be about 1 to 1.5 truck lengths at 60 with stock, then he would start catching me between 60-70, be neck and neck between 70-75, then he would pass me around mid 70s. needless you will be much slower on low end up until the 60's so unless you like to race people starting at 60-100 it is pointless
this was at sea level however, if it was at a higher altitude the story could be much different

First, yank the TBS. They are worthless.
Second, intakes are on of the most hotly debated topics on TS. Some folks swear by them and some folks swear at them.
There is a poll in the poll forum about the "best" intake, and the overwhelming choice is the stock intake. For most people, adding a intake will almost always result in the loss of low-end torque.

My truck is a stock 2005 with a replacement 3 chamber flowmaster.
My buddies truck is a 2006 with a K&N CAI and a 3 inch full exhaust magnaflow(No headers) I beat him every time we race. Stock is where it is at.

if you are wanting an intake go with the true flow system. it uses the stock box and replaces the intake tube with a much smoother direct one. as far as the tbs goes throw it away.

Dumb question from a not so knowledgeable engine guy....what does MAF stand for? manifold?
The only dumb question is the one not asked.
