Forced Induction SystemsDetailed discussions regarding cold-air intake systens, superchargers, turbo chargers, and other induction systems for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "TRD CAI Installed", within the Forced Induction Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Finally made the decision. Took out the K&N Filter and installed the TRD CAI. I haven't decided yet whether to cut the engine cover or raise it... Leaning towards raising because someday I may put it all back stock for re-sale. (???)
As far as any changes... well, I felt more of a difference going from stock to the K&N filter than I did going from the K&N to the CAI. Of course it's all butt dyno... nothing technical. There is definitely more noise... not bad, but more. The install is much more difficult than the Volant but if you can change oil & filter, you can do it. Instructions are very good, everything fit perfectly with top notch quality components. No comparison in those terms. I don't want to start another debate over the value of such mods... Just want to share my experiences.
The engine cover reduces induction noise going through the intake manifold. This is a major section for noise, thus the insulated cover. If you ran with the cover off you would find it quite a bit louder without change in system.
I also installed TRD CAI a few weeks about and can not tell the difference in sound except when on the throttle during acceleration or climbing a hill. I do also have TRD exhaust so I suspect the CAI is competing with exhaust to be heard.
When at full throttle, all bets are off. Sounds like the hounds were released from the gates of hell.
My but dyno also confirmed increase in power so we know its there??? One sure thing is that throttle response was increased exponentially. Not sure why, but a large noticeable difference.
Great pics. Now I can't sleep! I have 13 days until I return to TEXAS and drive my truck again. Today it is having the TRD CAI, TRD dual exhaust, and TRD sway bar installed. I bought all the parts from Sparks. Fast shipping and exactly what I ordered.
So thanks alot man. Now I have to be a little kid before his birthday anxious for two weeks. Seriously, the pics are just what I needed. SCHWEET!

Do I understand the TRD CAI correctly in that the cone shaped filter element is mounted to the base, not the tube? The dirt side of the filter is also the inside of the cone? Is the red tube plastic or metal? Is the filter element dry or wet and cleanable/reusable? Any close-up pics of the inside showing the element?

Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience!

Well, it is mounted to a plate that is sandwiched between the two halves.
Hmmm, I'll have to think about that one... I want to say yes... but honestly don't remember.
Aluminum... two halves... butt welded in the center, with a beautiful root bead and clean face, if you are interested in these things.
Wet... and Yes/Yes
No... I was too excited doing it to stop along the way for pics. Maybe later.

thinkin bout getting the TRD CAI too..my previous '06 Tundra had Volant kit so how do you like the sound of the TRD CAI comparing to the quiet stock??
The sound change is barely discernible at anything less than full throttle... But baby, at WOT it's bad to the bone. But... I think most of the owners of other systems say the same. So it's kinda personal. For me Fit, Finish and quality components are a must, to go along with performance gains. And in MY Opinion... This is where the TRD separates itself from the pack. Kind of like the Tundra .

I like the sound of TRD too. Louder than stock but not very loud, just what I wanted. Did not see much improvement on MPG side, since I try to enjoy the sound
Went for TRD mostly because it's yota plus it is certified for emissions. Probably by the summer will start looking for exhaust (TRD sound tempting)
Quality is amazing. Did cut the cover (I do not plan to go back to stock) Very easy ti install, took me longer to cut the cover!

As mentioned by another subscriber I do not see how a CAI is any different than stock as they both draw air from the same place. please somebody explain.

First, the Intake duct that goes to the engine after is larger and has less bends,. Second the filter housing is larger. And third, the reusable filter is cone shaped which I believe gives it more surface area and it is much thinner then the stock filter giving it less friction loss. I noticed an instant difference in power. And I like the TRD products because there's no chance of violating my Warranty. Does that help? Good luck
Had a hiccup in the shipping of my parts from Sparks. My wife dropped off the truck for the install last weekend. The rear half of the exhaust system was missing. Contacted Ken at Sparks. He ran down the Fed Ex tracking # and the box was MIA. He sent another box on Monday. It arrived Thursday. So FINALLY today my TRD intake and dual exhaust is complete!!!
I just want to thank Ken at Sparks Toyota for the fastest shipping possible during the holiday season. This is what I call customer service and making things right. They have earned my repeat TRD business.
Six days until I can hear my truck roar. I've been closely following all the header, CAI, dual exhaust, and lift posts. It is entertaining, informative, and educational to see folks improve their vehicles and customize them into a unique entity.
Please keep posting all the mods. I LIKE IT!!!

I too have the TRD CAI, exhaust and sway bar. The CAI/exhaust combo is pretty quiet till you get on it. This is the way I like it.......some might perfer the louder borla/airraid,kn, etc...... Either way no one can argue with the fit, finish and quality of these TRD parts.
