Forced Induction SystemsDetailed discussions regarding cold-air intake systens, superchargers, turbo chargers, and other induction systems for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "TRD CAI Installed", within the Forced Induction Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Finally made the decision. Took out the K&N Filter and installed the TRD CAI. I haven't decided yet whether to cut the engine cover or raise it... Leaning towards raising because someday I may put it all back stock for re-sale. (???)
As far as any changes... well, I felt more of a difference going from stock to the K&N filter than I did going from the K&N to the CAI. Of course it's all butt dyno... nothing technical. There is definitely more noise... not bad, but more. The install is much more difficult than the Volant but if you can change oil & filter, you can do it. Instructions are very good, everything fit perfectly with top notch quality components. No comparison in those terms. I don't want to start another debate over the value of such mods... Just want to share my experiences.

I believe the K&N was a drop in and the TRD is a complete system.

You are correct RudyDep... K&N was a drop in (stock box) filter only. About $60... The TRD was a complete CAI, about $400.
I thought I attached pics, but I don' see them... I'll try again.

How does it feel going from the Volant to the TRD? How does the TRD sound compared to TRD as well?

I too am interested in the sound. How does the TRD CAI sound compared to stock? I don't need a loud monster as I'm turning into an old fart. Is it similar to the K&N filterchargers?

why do we call it a CAI (cold air intake) when we use the stock intake hole which is into the right front fender well. the stock system is cold air pickup. unless you run a hose from the stock hole in the fender well to the front of the truck, you are not getting any colder air than stock. if you do not have fog lights that is a good place to pick up colder and pressureized air.
Humm... As for the sound, it is slightly louder than the K&N Filter which was barely noticeable from stock. These are very slight increases one to the other, but you can tell the difference. I cannot compare it to the Volant, as some of you may know from a previous post, when I found the fitment problem on the Volant I immediately removed it. I never even started the thing. In retro... I should have I guess. (I'm not much help am I) The Performance gain "claims" on the TRD are not as impressively stated as some of the other Manufactures, but I trust their more conservative numbers. And as for Fit, Finish, and quality of components... well, it is TRD (Toy).
And... I did try to upload some pics of the finished install but not step by step. I think they were too large... I'll try something different.

I have the 4.7 Tundra, and I plan on putting the K&N CAI in, or would you recomend the TRD version over the K&N. I was going to switch the hard filter to the micro amsoil filter.

pics of install please....I'm looking at doing this as well.
Sorry, I didn't take sequential photos of the install but... TRDSparks has an exact copy of the factory instructions on their site. It's pretty much step by step exact, and well written. No surprises!!! Below is the web address to the PDF file. Good Luck. Oh yea... They also have the best price I have seen. This is not an endorsement... I bought mine at my local dealer... paid way more for that eye to eye contact.
I haven't decided yet whether to cut the engine cover or raise it...
Well... I did it... After a few miles of driving without it... (you know, that worthless piece of plastic covering the engine) I came to realize that it actually does reduce some of the engine noise, at least for my ears, so... I did the TRD recommended cut out. Looks OK I guess. I'm not suggesting that everyone should do this... again, just sharing.
