Forced Induction SystemsDetailed discussions regarding cold-air intake systens, superchargers, turbo chargers, and other induction systems for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Doug Thorley Tundra 5.7 group buy", within the Forced Induction Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
1. I learned a LONG time ago not to place any stock whatsoever into a companies dyno. I dont care how reputable they attempt to make themselves appear to be (Im not insinuating any in this particular discussion arent), they are still in the game to reap a profit, and I think alot of us consumers lose sight of that in the rush to get a mod we want.
2. Lets just cut the bull sh*t shall we...these are shorty headers, just as JBA headers are shorty headers. They arent mid lenth, or even close to a long tube. Most other shorty headers are in the $300 range. There are LONG tubes available in other applications for less than these shorties. In other words, its a rip off by first to the market suppliers IMO. Will I buy some? Who knows once some independent dyno testing is done and if no other mid length/long tube options become available. But as of now, I think its a little premature to jump on the bandwagon for either of these headers just yet.

Since this is already getting pretty far off topic...
Has anyone noticed any increases in fuel economy with the addition of the DT headers? I saw this ad on their website that mentions a 2-4mpg increase (bottom left).
...probably because there is no flow chart in the Toyota service manual for header installation. This is just another reason why it is best installed by yourself.
Install them yourself, JBA or DT's or wharever mod you want to do. This group will back you with experience and help you get thru.
Sure wish we could get some seat of the pants or unbiased comparison between the DT's and JBA's. I wish Hooker got envolved with building some. I would buy if more facts were out.
After installing the DT's I think trying to install long tubes would be a real pain. Theirs not much room to slide the headers up to the head from under the truck and long tubes would mean you would need a lift.If they would even fit at all.
Very true, but all the Supercomps I have bought were not one piece long tubes. The primaries on each side were in several pieces and slid together to get around engine/frame obstructions. Tough install, but doable.
You cannot get ceramic coated 14ga AMERICAN MADE headers for $250.00. You CAN get CHINA or MEXICO made 18ga headers with 1/4" flanges for $250.00. Our headers are made out of the thickest materials in the industry with the best coatings and are 100% AMERICAN made with a limited LIFETIME WARRANTY. Who else has this? That is like comparing a Yugo to your Tundra. They both carry you from place to place, Why the price difference?

Long tubes will more than likely not be available. They would not be smog legal and that is our Niche(exept a certain few). The other's that are 409 will rust faster than a chrome or ceramic plated version. The ceramic is the best choice for rust or corrosion resistance other than 304 stainless. If there is a demand for the 304 than we would make it. 409 stainless is what we call "Barely" stainless. It does rust and is made with just enough of the proper elements to give it the title.
To address this issue,

Our headers are a Tri-Y header. It is a 4-2 than 2-1 type setup. Is is longer than a conventional shorty style. Also as far as cost goes it is much more costly to do a tight compact wrap around design than make a long tube type. Cut and welds add alot to the cost. Putting bends in tubes doesn't cost much but when you have a person making cuts and welding tubes by hand because of the tight working spaces it adds to the cost greatly. If we did do a straight 4-1 shorty it would be much cheaper but it would not perform as well which is what Thorley is after. So before people start bashing or talking about pricing consider the amount of time it takes to hand build a set of headers. That is what these are. Ok enough venting for now.

In other words, yes they are a shorty header. The rest is just smoke and mirrors to defend your high prices IMO.
As I said before, Im not ruling out buying anything, but until they are proven by an independent, unbiased third party any dyno results I see have no validity whatsoever. Its also known that shorties show the least gains of any type of header. You say a longtube isnt likely, I say we'll see.

Yours arent long tubes either.
Quit comparing apples to oranges.

07sport do you have some inside info I don't have about some SMOG LEGAL long tubes? Because by law you cannot move your cats or remove cats and have them retain the legal status. If you can fit a long tube under that hood and not move cats you are hired. As far as you whining about dyno results do it yourself! We have stepped up and YOU are not going to recieve the free set you are trying to get. If you have some special knowledge that we at Thorley don't have please share it. I am here to anwser people's exhaust related questions. I am not here to go back and forth with you and the same gripes you have. I have made my points and proved my points honestly and if they are not how you want them then I am sorry. If anybody else has any questions or concerns than please ask .

1. I have no idea, Im not an exhaust tech, nor am I concerned about smog testing as none is done in my state.
2. I have never once requested a free set of your headers, nor do I want one. I have no access to a dyno, so I couldnt provide the type of results the members of this and other Tundra forums are desiring.
3. If you look and listen close, a man will show you his true colors. I have never said anything derogatory about you, or your product, other than requesting further unbiased testing and pointing out the fact, that despite descriptive adverbs, it is in fact a shorty header.
I for one dont appreciate being called a whiner by a supposed respected preferred dealer. If that is how you treat your prospective consumers, then Ill simply say, no thanks.
I wish only to get to the straight truth, on all aftermarket possibilities, for both myself and my fellow Tundra owners.
