Forced Induction SystemsDetailed discussions regarding cold-air intake systens, superchargers, turbo chargers, and other induction systems for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Installed Volant intake-mpg's are lower", within the Forced Induction Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
So, I installed my Volant intake a few days ago. The installation was relatively easy and straightforward. It seems that Volant has improved their installation instructions. They contained step by step instructions with photographs, which was easily understandable. It took me maybe 15 minutes. The hardest part was getting the filter in and out of the intake box. There is a gap in the fenderwell opening. It seems like the Volant opening sits higher than the stock fenderwell opening and that the Volant opening is partially covered by fender. I couldn't adjust the Volant to line up. For best results, it seems like the fenderwell opening should be enlarged. Maybe one day. Results: I reconnected the battery and fired her up. It sputtered and killed. I started her up again and it ran perfect. This thing sounds like a BEAST when you give it gas, but is subdued in normal driving. Throttle response is improved and power/tq has definitely increased by at least 10 or so respectively. After a few trips here and there I was pleasantly surprised to see my mpg's go from 13.9 stock to 14.2, but as suddenly as it rose, it started to drop. It went down and down to 12.8. Recently, it has started to rise again and it sits at 13.3 right now. All of this has been mainly city driving with very few full throttle runs, driving style is the same as before with stock intake and AFE drop-in. I'm hoping that over the next tank or two I will at least get back up to stock levels, but I doubt i will ever see 2mpg more as advertised. Oh well, the power and sound is worth it. What is everyone elses results with the Volant.

you cannot possibly measure gas mileage by the computer, the only surefire way is to fill it up, the same way, everytime, and then there will be error.
your frustrations on this matter are unwarranted, try to get a better reading by duplicating fillups.

i would give the computer time to adjust and see what happens
Yeah, I'm hoping that over the next two tanks, i'll see an improvement. I told my fiance i bought it to increase mpg's and every time she gets in the truck, she checks the mpg only to see that its lower than before. She then gives me this look and rolls her eyes, lol.

I agree, give it a little time. My AFE drop in caused a slight reduction also. Not sure how much because the 10% ethanol and colder temps started not long after I dropped it in.

I don't understand any part of your post. I'm going by the mpg indicator on the dash, which many have found to be accurate to within .1-.2 mpg's. I always fill up completely and I'm nearing the end of my first full tank with the Volant installed. I had about 1/4 tank when i first installed it, and then filled up when I was near E. Also, I don't think i ever implied in my post that I was frustrated. I actually didn't expect to see an increase in mpgs, so i'm not surprised or upset.

okay; let me restate this another way, digital readout on the dash is not accurate.
if you could remove all the air out of the tank during each refill, then you could better measure fuel consumption, the dash is just an approximation, if you take it for more than it is, your calculations will be off. food for thought; when the fuel tank says empty, there maybe 5-6gallons in tank. sorry if i offended you.

I've been getting steadily better and better mileage on my tundra since I installed the exhaust and Volant intake. When I first installed it, my mileage went down. So I think it does take time for the system to adjust. Keep in mind, i didn't unplug the battery so it didn't start fresh.

I know the dash readout isn't extremely accurate, but i feel as though it did provide a baseline. Before the Volant, the mpg indicator fluctuated between 13.8-13.9, no matter how, when or where I filled up. That's with a few full throttle bursts every now and then. After the Volant and going on two full tanks of gas, and driving normally, the indicator dropped 1 mpg and has been slowly rising. Its still below stock levels, but I know that the computer is still adjusting. I brought it up because some on here have noticed immediate gains in mpg after installing an intake, which I found interesting.

I have the TRD CAI and dual exhaust. I did not reset the computer and my mpg's are the same. 17.2 on all the same roads. I have done a couple of 100 mile trips since the install. It "feels" crisper and more responsive. The dual exhaust sounds exactly like I had hoped. Is it worth the $$? Probably not.
The wife does not understand my interest in upgrades but allows me the indulgence of adding parts to a perfectly good truck. Soooo next on the agenda is DT headers. SCHWEET!
