Forced Induction SystemsDetailed discussions regarding cold-air intake systens, superchargers, turbo chargers, and other induction systems for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "CAI may be coming off!", within the Forced Induction Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Haven't had a single problem with my truck in 6500 miles. (knocking on wood)
Friday, my Check Engine Light comes on. Nothing wrong performance wise so I waited for today and I take it for an oil change and they tell me the K&N CAI is letting oil get on the MAF sensor. I will need to replace the MAF and it is NOT covered under warranty. I say BS! and get a ride to the dealer. When I arrive the tech says he took out the MAF sensor and saw no oil on it and reset the code.
I called K&N, tell them what the dealer tech said and read them the code, P0101. K&N says it is a "lean" code which means there is probably an air leak in the pipe. I tell them that there is NO air leak as I have already checked and double checked everything.
I called Auto Anything and asked if they would refund the cost of the CAI. AA called K&N and got approval for a refund.
Since I don't know who to believe and don't want to give the dealer an opportunity to refuse any warranty repairs in the future, I believe I am returning my truck to the stock intake.

I no longer jack with my vehicles as far as performance goes. I have had a few bimmers. Two of which were Dinan badged. They were very reliable, but mods cause issues. PERIOD!!
I thought K&N's web site said oil (from the filter element) on the MAF sensor was impossible.

Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience!

Thanks for the suggestion.
K&N has been around and has a very good rep. Much more so than other CAI of aftermarket filter manufacturers IMO. No one does more R&D than they do. I believe that Toyota may know what is best for the Tundra and I noticed no gains in HP or MPG (other than noise) from the K&N.

I performed before and after dynos of stock versus intake/exhaust, and there are indeed gains. I agree that K&N makes good drop-ins, but I personally would not purchase their intake systems. I like the aFe because it has an enclosed box, so it's more factory, at least IMO. In this case, I think reputation might be considered somewhat subjective...
Toyota builds their vehicles to suit a variety of needs. Not everyone wants a loud intake, even if it means a slight power increase.
I had a K&N on my chevy and had a problem with lose of power and SES light on and the code was a lean code. On my scanner it showed only 90 grams of air per second at WOT. I replaced the MAF sensor and the reading went up over 250 G per sec. The K&N had over 15,000 miles on it at that time and I had not oiled it (just the factory oil). Not sure if there was oil on the MAF but replacing the sensor fixed my problem. I have heard of others with oil on the MAF that were repaired by spraying off with carb cleaner. We even cleaned the MAF on several 3800 GM motors this way with good results.

I think you may have just had a bad sensor. From what I read on the link djb posted, K&N says that they submerged a sensor in filter oil and even that would not make it malfunction or set off a CEL.
I am believing more and more that the dealers tech is FOS!

I'm happy with the AFE DRY filter, switch to it and you'll be OK, I had the same problem with K&N in one of my Fords.
