Its the sensor closest to the engine... probably in front of the catalytic converter. (Oxygen sensors are located on the exhaust pipe on the section from the motor to somewhere before the muffler). They look something like a spark plug.

It depends on how long they have been in the vehicle. On some the nuts corrode. If you are not handy or are short on patience... take it to a shop. Front sensor is mounted differently than the rear.

Quick write-up

Stick your nose in there and determine the condition of your O2 sensors, use common sense, and then act.

yeah if you have to question if you can do it, then i would say take it to a shop and be safe! Being a 2000 also, the nuts probably have corroded pretty good so it might be tough getting them out.

More like hammer 10mm socket onto corroded 11mm nut and say prayer to your favorite saint.

its the sensor on the driver side exhaust manifold it should be in plain site. (a lift would be very useful if available) I work at an autozone and we loan out the socket to take them out. It will have a wire coming out of the top connected with a clip which can be a pain to get your hand on. One other hazard is the threads being basically welded to the manifold and you will end up stripping it out. If that occurs i'd try some liquid wrench if not, then a trip to the ole mechanic.

Default Re: Write up on O2 sensor replacement?

a couple of months back i did a o2 sensor on my 96 tacoma, (same engine).
i did the sensor before the cat. it is very easy to get to. crawl under the truck a couple of days before you plan on doing it and soak it w/ pb blaster. when you are ready to do it give the nuts a couple of LIGHT taps to help break the rust loose. the rest is pretty straight forward. make sure to put new gasket on there as well.

the only tricky part was that the plug for the sensor was on top of he transmission. If you have a manual tranny like i did all you have to do is take off the shifter boot and it is right there. if it is an auto then you have to feel around, use a mirror to see what you are doing.

hope this helps

good luck
