Just dropped about $60 on a K&N air filter that's supposed to be reuseable. What are some of your experiences on using these filters. Specifically, any issues w/ power, gas mileage, dirtying up your intake parts b/c the filter is "pre-oiled"; any other particular problems?
Or any particular advantages besides saving some money over time.
I bought one for a Mitsubishi Eclipse turbo. No change in power or fuel mileage.I've had mine for 10 years. Its only good for longevity. This is the last filter you will buy for your car, just remember to clean and oil it at 50,000 miles.Sooner if you travel dusty roads.
These three experts would tell you using a K&N is a good way to degrade or ruin your MAF sensor which in turn increases fuel consumption which in turn degrades the lifespan of your expensive California emission system components.
The MAF sensor issues are a result of over oiling the filter. Oil it properly and there will be no issue.
That being said, it is true K&N filters have drawbacks. They do flow more air than most other filters, but they do so at the expense of filtering ability, i.e. they let in more dirt. Under most practical scenarios, such as daily commutes on paved roads, this will not cause problems. If you travel anywhere where dust is consistently present, however, you should not use a K&N filter. I run them on my daily drivers, but I would not use them on my ATV.
IMO a sign of their reduced dust stopping ability is the fact that K&N themselves sell a "pre-filter" to wrap around the outside of the filter to enhance its performance.
i would also recommend it with the dry charger. dont over oil if you dont get the dry charger... i dont think they would be that bad if toyota is willing to sell them right next to the trd section at my dealership. plus you make your money back buy cleaning them instead of buy a new one everytime you need to change it. ive had them on all my cars trucks and street bikes...but not on my dirtbikes for the above reasons...i use uni filters for that.
So far all of your posts have me wondering about this product. The only plus, thus the only reason, I bought the thing is for it's lifetime use. By what you guys are saying, all the extra things/parts you have to do to maintain what otherwise should be a simple and carefree remove/replace maintenance procedure has me considering returning the thing.

Which saves what, precisely? Replacing a filter requires a minute or two, so it doesn't save any time that makes it worthwhile. You'll be back to get other parts (oil filters, spark plugs, etc.) so it doesn't save any time at the parts counter that makes it worthwhile. Cleaning it now and then requires one hell of a lot more work and time than replacing it.
Methinks it ought to do something really worthwhile before it is worth your while, and I fail to see what that something is. It adds risk, cost, and labor, all without benefit.

I'm 80/20 on returning.
That's why I don't use one. It ain't broke, so I don't fix it. The OEM Toyota filter does a fine job, it's inexpensive, and I'm content to replace it now and then. After 111,xxx miles, it still doesn't burn any oil between changes, and I'm quite satisfied.
IMO an optimal filter arrangement would be to somehow remodel the stock airbox to accommodate a Toyota paper filter with about twice the filter area than the stock one. This would provide the reduced restriction without allowing any dust to enter. Too bad it would be way too much work.

95/5 on returning the thing.
Might as well make a game out of it. Who's gonna make it 100?
