Guys,
I am buying a TRD kit for the my 5.7 and wondering if i can install it myself. my question, does it come pre-programmed? need a programmer? or how it get programmed? Can i do it myself? buy the programmer from somewhere?
for the mechanical parts installation, thats not a problem.
I have been reading all the supercharger related posts since it came out, and it seems to me the vast majority have the installation done at the dealer. That is not to say self installation is not possible. Toyota mentions this in their warranty statement for the supercharger, and we have seen installation documentation, so it is possible, just not a popular approach right now.
FWIW hang on a few months as the supercharger has cold weather driveability problems which should be fixed with updated firmware from TRD.
If you do, the supercharger will be covered under a 12 month warranty like all of Toyota parts.
Any shop with the proper equipment can reflash the ECU with the TRD calibration file. They have to make it available to real shops that have the equipment to reflash ECUs like the high end Snap On or Techstream diagnostic scan tools. Most just have the local Toyota dealer handle at least the reflash part.
You should definitely have it done at the dealer, as this will give you the 5year/60,000 mile waranty! The same as your engine! If you do it yourself, it is a 12,000mile/1year warranty! I have had the supercharger for about 4 months now and can honestly say it is a lot of fun! I live in the northeast, and havent had any cold weather problems with it myself! I know of 1 other person here on long island with this installed and both of us have had to have the rear differential replaced! Anybody else experience this problem?
Got mine done at the dealer, the cold weather problems are already fixed...And unfortunately, the dealer is the only shop I have heard of that can reflash the ECU. I wanted to install it but I decided not to due to the extended warranty from the dealer and the ECU flash....

I was thinking about picking one of these up for my 08 and maybe putting a little dry shot of nitrous on top with some race gas, since I heard the Toyota reflash runs pretty rich.
What kind of problems were you having with the rear end? Did the dealer give you any hassle about replacing it?

I agree with the post below about having the dealer install it. The difference in warranty is the clincher---1 versus 5 years.
I believe this to be beyond most people's ability as the manifold / blower / intercooler weighs around 98 lbs and Toyota recommends using special hooks and a cherry picker to lower that assembly onto the motor in a controlled manner. Since there is also a fuel pump upgrade it will be necessary to remove the tank or the bed. Toyota allows 12 hours for this installation.
yea but at 3500$ to install i think i can/will do it my self thats all but the price of the s/c it self, i still need to find out how much to flash it at the dealer. seems like this is somthing i will jsut hold out for till i can find a dealer thats not throwing prices this high

$3500 for install? Huh? Dealers are charging anywhere from $800 to $1200 depending where you live
You're paying $3500 for them to learn how to install it. You're probably the first truck they've done and you're paying them for their time to learn how. Try and find a dealer that has done it before.
You may also call other dealers, and get the prices, then call them back and tell them.
It's hard for me to believe that they are JUST quoting install. That is EXTREMLY high.
My local dealer wanted $1200 to install. I called around and found a place in the next city that woudl do it for $780. Called my dealership back and told them, and they said they would drop it to $800, which was worth it for me not to have to drive to the next one. That was the first install they did, and was pricing high because they didnt know how it would go.
