Lightbulb Intake Air Temperature Mod

Intake Air Temp Mod:

Has anyone DONE this?
Put the resistor inline with the sensor?
If so.. PLEASE... what is the resistance and type of resistor used?

I need the info to do this myself please!
Thanx!

I did a search for Muddog17, but there is no member listed with that name?

Is that member using an alternate name?

I believe I found it.. put a 4.7Kohm resistor in series with the IAT and it will trick the ECU in thinking it is 30 deg cooler than it really is. Should be good for 2 - 3 deg timing adv and a bit richer on the juice!

Who knows... will try and let you know!

Sounds about right,a coolant temp sensor should read around the low 30's (degs F) with that much resistance. And since the coolant temp sensor is a thermistor, resistance goes down as temps go up. A 1/2-watt resistor should handle the 5 volts that runs through the sensor circuit.
I'd run a SPDT switch so the resistor can be bypassed,and/or a pontentiometer to allow some adjustability to the sensor readings.

COOL!!! I did not think of that.... A serious idea!
I can add BOTh a coolant mod and a IAT mod BOTh with pots... and "dial in" what I need.. Drive and test.. drive and test!
Hmmmmm... on to something here!
Thanx!

Hmmm...coolant and IAT mod huh? Similar to a device I made
Mine bypasses the coolant temp sensor though,it's for testing purposes. I use this device to test certain emissions components, and to test them the coolant temp has to be within 15 degrees of air temp. The air temp sensor gets a fixed resistance while the coolant temp has a pot in order to "fine tune" the temperature. Of course you need a scantool to verify the temps.
I'd take photos of it,but the digicam broke

OK... ok.. so tell me you made such a device. What were the resitance values of the Coolant and IAT? I know I need a SPDT pot in the 5 to 10 watt range. Please share!
This is great info!

I'm using a 1.5K ohm resistor for the air temp sensor. A 0-2K ohm linear taper pot for the water temp sensor. There's also a SPDT switch wired after the pot to switch between the pot and a 180 ohm resistor. They're 1/2 watt resistors by the way.

Since you're "piggybacking" the sensors I'd use a higher resistance pot, like 5K ohm. I'm trying to create hotter readings, not cooler.

The box and my multimeter are at work,I'll bring both home tomorrow. I won't be able to get you the actual resistance values vs. temp readings until Monday since I'll be out all weekend.

That would be very kewl!!!

Here's some resistance values I found in the assembly manuals. I haven't had the chance to do an actual resistance to scantool temp readings test yet.

Intake Air Temp sensor:
-20 C (-4 F) = 12.5 - 16.9 Kohms
20 C (68 F) = 2.19 - 2.67 Kohms
60 C (140 F) = .5 - .68 Kohms

Coolant Temp sensor:
-20 C = 10 - 20 Kohms
0 C (32 F) = 4 - 7 Kohms
20 C = 2 - 3 Kohms
40 C (104 F) = .9 - 1.3 Kohms
60 C = .4 - .7 Kohms
80 C (176 F) = .2 - .4 Kohms

Can you tell me where I can get one of those resistors and where/how would I install it on my 03 Tundra V6 this would help my perfprmance a whloe lot since Guam is like 85 to 90 degrees all year long

An electronics supply store like Radio Shack sells resistors. They have to be at least 1/2 watt resistors,1/4 watt ones will probably burn out.
You need to find the positive wire of the sensor circuit and connect the resistor in series.
