Forced Induction SystemsDetailed discussions regarding cold-air intake systens, superchargers, turbo chargers, and other induction systems for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "duel exhaust noise", within the Forced Induction Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Can someone help me in my search for a catback duel systeme for my 05 DC. I would like a set of duels that give that nice low rumble but I tow alot and don't want them too noise that I can't use my cell phone or listen to Romie (you know what I mean clones) . I have seen some larger diameter systems that deliver that "don't mess with me" rumble but not the ear spitting cackle.
A Ram passed me this morning on the interstate and the duels were very noisy and sounded like @*?#. He had a Borla sticker in his back window.

What is the best solution?
Ihave a Gibson dual cat back out the side, could nat be happier. Just enough rumble but it is not the offensive type and had many compliments and very easy to install. Also in combination with a intake i have experienced some considerable horsepower gains.

Why do you want duals to begin with? If it's more torque for better towing, all of the bolt-on catback dual "systems" will either hurt torque and/or be way too loud for towing. Borla dual systems, BTW, are the among the quietest. Large diameter dual pipes look/sound impressive but are a guaranteed way to truly kill your torque between 2000 and 3500 RPM. There is such a thing as too-much exhaust for this engine and dual "systems", particularly large diameter duals are definitely too-much exhaust.
Duals on this truck sometimes improve top end horsepower...and almost always cut mid range torque. So unless you constantly tow near the redline RPM, having more horsepower won't improve your towing performance...but losing mid range torque will certainly hurt it. Having more torque at 3000 RPM will improve your towing capability and, if that's what you want, then do three things: (1) completely forget about dual pipes, (2) install JBA headers (due to be available this month) and (3) replace the stock muffler with a Gibson single muffler (muffler only...NOT the catback "system").

I went to the local muffler shop today asking for true duals. The owner told me it would kill my torque and that I would be happier with just a Flowmaster muffler. He saved me money and from disapointment.
I carefully selected the correct Flowmaster muffler, and let one of their recommended dealers install it. I have been pleased with the result. It sounds great when you put your foot in it, but tones down nicely when you're cruising.
You've got to be pretty careful not to open up the exhaust too much. Remember that a 4.7 V-8 is really about the same size as the ol' Mustang 289. It really doesn't need BIG exhaust pipes. My installer recommended what seemed like tiny tailpipes on my cat-back duals, but opened up at the rear with about 18 inches of 3 1/2 inch sausage-cut tips. Made a nice rumble, but didn't interfere with the towing capacity.
I really haven't towed much -- actually, just once. When I retired, I pulled the biggest U-Haul trailer you can rent up the Sierras from San Francisco to Wyoming. Both trailer and pickup were mostly loaded with bench and hand tools and other heavy stuff from my shop. I was pleased with how the Tundra V-8 pulled those fairly steep grades. Semed like I went my usual 10-MPH over the posted limit almost all the way to Wyoming!

What is the correct Flowmaster muffler for a Toyota Tundra and how much did it cost you to buy and have it installed?
