Question Exhaust Note - 05 Taco 4.0

I am looking at changing the muffler (just from the CAT, back...want it to be legal). I looked at various threads on this, but mostly they are just other folks like me who are asking questions (many are old threads too).

What I am looking for is to just "beef" up the sound the truck makes and with the following criteria:

1) Everything forward of the current stock muffler remains stock.
2) Looking for a sound similar to the sounds we all hear coming from V8 trucks...that low rumble at idle that changes to a nice Hemi roar when you step on it. Don't want to sound like a rice-rocket.
3) Not loud at cruising speeds - don't want a drone in the cab when on the freeway. (I have a double cab, long bed - so that helps as the muffler is a long way from the cab).

Anyone perform this mod on their truck and happy with the results?

I don't there's anything out there that's going to make a V6 sound like a V8 but a Gibson (more mellow tone) or a Flowmaster (louder) will definately change the pitch to a lower note. I had a Gibson on my Expedition and I was very happy. I will go with this for the Taco too.

I had a Flowmaster Delta Flow 50 Series muffler on my Supercharged 3.3 liter Nissan V6 engine from my last truck.

It meets all of the above criteria. I'll be getting the same muffler for the Taco.

I have a flowmaster SUV 50 installed. it does sound a little harsh, but not "ricey", when gunning it (almost like a sea doo in water), but you cant even hear it when crusing at 70mph at 2000 rpms.

I don't think any exhaust can make a V6 sound like a V8.

Default Flowmaster 50

Is the flowmaster 50 a bolt-on you can do yourself, or do I need to bring it to a shop? And on that note, where is the best place to buy one online? Thanks

I take it these aftermarket "cat back" exhaust systems bolt up to the stock exhaust system at the point just after were the left and right engine exhaust tubes (after all the cats) come together?

I agree with most of Don's criteria and am seeking similar results.

I have heard good things about both Gibsons and Flowies.
Based on my research I will go with the Flowmaster Delta 50. But, I am going to have the crossover pipe cut out and rerouted up closer so I dont have to sweat it on the trail since I am working toward making my truck sound nice AND perform better both on the street and off road.

I would go for the gibson cat back, I have had the stainless one on for about a week and it sounds real nice. Not too loud, not too soft. Cruising on the freeway you really don't hear it, around town you here it when you give it some pedal. I had a flowmaster 40 series non-delta flow and I didn't care for the sound whatsoever, I have heard that a flowmaster delta flow 50 series sounds good on the 4.0, I had one on a 97' Taco with the 3.4 V6 and it sounded real nice as well. The Gibson is less aggressive sounding is all, It sounds classy. . .

I haven`t talked to the shop yet `cause I got sidetracked with the powdercoating and stereo

I want duals off each side with no crossover pipe I seem to remember a setup like that but can`t remember for sure

Has anyone done this?
