Default Improving my exhaust situation

Well the first week i bought my 05' V6 tundra....i went to Meinike knowing next to nothing and asked them for a cat back exhaust system, they said I could choose from either Borla or Flowmaster.
I chose the Flowmaster because it was cheaper and louder. I THOUGHT that was what I wanted. I further compounded the problem by later "dumping" the exhaust. I thought I wanted it louder but now after a few months and a couple road trips im sick of all the noise. I have evaluated the situation under the truck and am thinking its time for a change.

Heres what it looks like after Meinike finished with it. They took out the Y pipe and now have individual pipes coming from each cat converter to an "in" on the "flowrestrictor" as some call it. So two pipes are going in and one is coming out. The pipes they put on seem to measure at about 2.5. The one that was on there (stock) seems to have been a tad less. There is a single pipe coming out the end of the flowmaster, and as I said I chopped that off an inch after the muffler.

I kept all the origional equipment. What I have noticed is a MUCH louder exhaust and it seems to have lost a little low end. Its really hard for me to tell about the performance high or low though. So....I am in the process of obtaining new headers from JBA at the moment, they just came out with new ones for my new 4.0 litre V6. In addition to that I want to make the exhaust quieter and help improve low end torque and/or horsepower. Let me ad that I do like the quieter sound of the magnaflow. I want have something that suppplements the performace improvements of the headers.

So as far as the Y pipe, dual to single and the Flow-restrictor, what should I have done to the exhaust and all that? My guess is have them put the y pipe back on and have a single in and out with a new magnaflow??? I remember RockMtnRay made a distinction between pre 2005 Tundras and 2005's. I didnt understand what the difference was and how that effects this situation? I dont tow with my V6 Tundra, my objective is to help maximize the effects of the headers on performance. In addition im more interested in off the line torque and HP than higher end. Last how do I choose between all the universal mufflers from Magnaflow.....what diameter in and out is best and whats the deal with the offset ones? Sorry this is so long but I wanted to be as specific as possible and give you all the details so my questions is clear and easy to answer...Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Please be as detailed in your suggestions as possible so I can relay it to who ever is goingt o do the work...

Hey there have written this before and it worked/s for me. I have a 2000 SR5 V-8, but the concept is the same. Get a 2" dual in and out "cat" from JC Whitney, ($125 +/-) Summit ($89 +/-). From Summit purchase the Dyno Max 2" inlet/outlet offset "Hemi muffler" 20/21" case ($48 each). Put the cat where the "Y" was so each exhaust/header manifold enters a pipe. then run 2" (dual pipes) from the cat straight back to the 2 Hemi mufflers and exit where you desire. I did this some two and half years ago, LOVE IT! no loss of bottom end and the sound is great, can barely hear it driving until you open it up and then it sounds like a Mustang GT. Cost me about $500 total. Good luck, CSM-H

If I'm not mistaken the V6 didn't change. The V8 did because of the VVTI that was added to the engine for 05. That engine didn't meet emission standards without adding air injection to the exhaust manifolds. Someone will correct me if I'm off base.
Personally I think your plan of doing the JBA's, the factory Y pipe single in single out muffler with a rear or original location side outlet. I have a Aero-Turbine on my V8 and like it but these things are all personal opinions. You might go to the Aero-Turbine web site and see if they have a sound clip for the V6. They aren't cheap but they are built very well. Good Luck on whichever you choose.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????

Default Exhaust systems

Ray, in the towing group has tons of information on how systems work and why, probably more then you will ever want to know, go over and look at all the towing threads for his very inciteful information. Did I understand you to say that JBA now has a header for the '05 4.0....Where is that checkbook.

Default Yep

They do have a set of headers for your 05 V6. They made them first for the souped up Taco, and they easily can fit the Tundra just the same.
