Forced Induction SystemsDetailed discussions regarding cold-air intake systens, superchargers, turbo chargers, and other induction systems for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Cold air intake", within the Forced Induction Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Has anyone put a cold air intake on their Tudra? I was looking at the K&N and was wanted to know if it was worth the time and effort. Also if it voided the factory warrentee at all.
thanks,
-Steve
Hi Shawn,
Was it difficult to install? I have heard there is a good performance increase as well as sound from the engine and gas millage increase. Is this true? Thanks for the info,
-Steve
Steve,
It was very easy to install and it took about one hour. The performance increase comes in the upper end of the power band and the throaty sound that it gives to the stock exhaust is well worth it. As for mileage increase, I haven't seen it because I have too much fun gunning it!! I had pics of it on the old site, so hopefully I will be able to post them here also.
Shawn

Be sure to get the dry charger for the filter as well. PTDC (prior to database crash ) someone said K&N gave it to them for free. Also, be sure that you disconnect the neg term of the battery during the install so that you computer can reset. Lastly, do not think of the kit as a true cold air intake system. It will still suck in heated air from the engine compartment. The heat shield helps some, but not a complete block by any means.
Enjoy!!

I took the air box and cut the front, I then installed a complete enclosure around the air box from the side of the radiator to the back fo the air box and the fender well. I cut the sheet metal away from around the front right headlight. I am currently forming two scoops one for the grill to force air to the right side and one for the bumper to force air up. I have isolated the air box from the hot air in the engine and I will soon have a complete cold air induction setup. Yes...............
I was all set to order the K&N when I started to look for a ram air setup. I have seen some 4Runners with the hood scoop and I was wondering if they were true air induction setups. Anyone ever heard of something like this for the tundra?
Might want to do some research...
The k&n FIPK (or whatever it is) cold air intake for the 3.4l (tested in 4-runners) actually decreases HP. This site http://www.gadgetonline.com/4run.htm Awesome Supercharging Page 3.4 L has TONS of info. The guy has done everyting, including making over 300 HP from his supercharged 3.4l He has run many dyno's and found the K&N unit to decrease HP. Cutting a hole into the air cleaner or removing the elbo allowed for the greatest increase in power. Now I know this is the 3.4 and not the 4.7 v8. But you might want to check around to make sure the same isn't true or similar.
Good luck.
Todd
i too looked into getting a cold air intake but when i asked a tech at the dealership about it he mentioned that he has seen a lot of O2 sensors in the tundras go bad because of oil gumming them up. it sounds fishy to me but why would he lie? i was wondering if you guys thought that this is a problem with owners overlubing their filters or if its just a problem period. im mortified of throwing one of those things in my truck merely because he said it voided my engine warranty or something to that nature. what is your take on this (anyone)? he also mentioned that trd makes a reusable drop in thats not supposed to gum up the sensor- but how would they do that? is there a way around the lube for the filter?
thanks,aika
I also have the K&N Gen II Kit and its great. The sound is deeper, and yet not too loud (unless you really get on it, then u can hear it!!) I also had the RMM intake (what a P.O.S. that was!) The K&N Gen II Kit is alot better, while you do lose abit off the bottom end power the increase in mid-range to top end (seat of the pants impression only! I dont have any solid proof) is well worth it. I picked mine up on ebay for $200 even! To me it was well worth it. I want to pick up the borla but i dont want it to be too loud, I have heard the wav files and it sounds great, but im just wondering how the K&N Gen II Kit and borla would sound and work together. Does anyone have the borla and K&N Gen II Kit ? If so how loud is it?
i have a AEM cold air intake for my 2002 TRD Tundra... and i must say that i am strongly convinced that it is the best sounding (like veryyyyy loud intake with a turbo sounding suction coming from the cone) and best performaning intake on the market.. I received at least 15 hp+ from this intake
