Question TRD Dual Exhaust or what else?

Is the TRD Dual Exhaust system all that good or is there another dual exhaust system just as good for a lot less money?

Borla makes the TRD exhaust so you could get one of there setups for a little less than the TRD.

TRD duals are made by Borla. The only difference between TRD and Borla is TRD is quieter due to the presence of an extra resonator. Both are very expensive, but have excellent fit and finish. I cannot speak for Borla, but on a VVT engine, the TRD does nothing for performance....not even a tenth more.

A buddy of mine just did the following to his Tundra:

    - Dual Exhaust
    - Magnaflows
    - FRAMBoost (FRAM BOOST AIR INTAKE SYSTEM)

All for under $500. It definitely woke up the engine and improved throttle repsonse. The truck is noticeable quicker. Something to think about.
    Previous Trucks Owned:

    1990 Toyota Xtra-Cab 2wd (145,000 miles)
1996 Toyota Tacoma Ext. Cab 4wd (171,000 miles)

Maybe not in the gas mileage/efficiency department, but the TRD exhaust that I just got DOES make the truck a little quicker. Not much, mind you, but just enough to make a DC seem like driving an AC.

I also like it because it's not obnoxiously loud - just a low rumble. It looks pretty nice, too. It also came with the truck, so I'm not complaining about the out-of-pocket cost .

Do you have any time slips to confirm this?

I found a local muffler/exaust shop, (not one of the chains), to put on my system. Went with the flowmaster 40 series delta flow, cut off the resonator and the shop custom bent the tubing. I was able to pick out the tips I wanted and it only cost $350 out the door! Sounds incredible and I can tell there is a little better throttle response. Thought about doing the expensive cat back system like borla but this worked out so much better (and cheaper).

My Borla purchased at the Toyota dealer cost $570 body shop discounted
it came with a K&N permanent filter, this was before they started labeling them TRD exhaust, its louder for sure, i love it throttle response is better
and after the jba headers the truck is quicker. No time slips just feel.

Larry Mac - Here's some info from an old post of mine back in Nov 2004...

I recently purchased the TRD dual exhaust (one muffler/two tail pipes) from SteveG over at Carson Toyota. I know I could have spent much less on another brand of exhaust mod, but am extremely happy with my TRD duals. As far as you asking if it's worth it, that really depends on what you are looking for. Researching exhaust before my purchase here on TS made me pick the TRD duals to meet my needs.

I did not want a "true" dual exhaust system as many sources told me the four valve heads on the Toyota V8 will lose too much low end performance.

I did not want the exhaust to be too loud. The Flowmaster 40's some of my friends have are too loud. I like the way they sound, but just too loud for "me".

I wanted something that was made specifically for my Tundra so installation would be easy.

FYI, I have a '04 Tundra Access Cab, V8, Limited, TRD Sport package. The TRD duals are my only mod. I think the TRD duals make the V8 sound like it should have from the factory. I have not noticed any performance and/or gas mileage gains or loses. I hope some of this info will help.

As I mentioned, the TRD exhaust is pricy, but I would still do it all over again if I had to.

Waste of money just to for a dual "look", cause thats all you're gonna get, is a "look". Save your money and swap out a muffler and thow on a custom tail pipe. Cheap, and sounds great. No cab drone. I have pics if you want.

Which muffler would you suggest, for a nice mellow sound?

No, I'm really not into "performance" in that sense. My philosophy being that it's a truck and generally I use it that way: to haul things from place to place and as basic/recreational transportation, to get out into the woods where a car might not be able to go. I'm not a speed demon and like I said, it's not a big difference and certainly isn't one that I would recommend for someone hoping to be able to break the sound barrier or outrun the state police, but it's definitely discernable, especially when you go from driving a truck without one to one with it installed.

As far as the "nice, mellow sound", go down to your local dealer and test drive a Tundra with the TRD - it might just be the sound you're looking for. I actually would have balked on getting it if it made my truck sound like a race car, but I like it because - as dlnak said in his post - it makes a v8 sound like I expect it to sound. And again, it came with the truck, so it wasn't a "waste" of money in that sense.

After some research on this site and others, I found that if you plan on having a street truck, go for the dual exhaust and 3" pipes. The sound will be alot deeper. However, if you are towing, etc. Stock is the way to go. I tow so I left the stock pipes as they were and just added a Flowmaster 40 and a Wicked Exhaust tip. If you use 3" pipes and "open" up your exhaust when you plan to tow, you will actually lose low end torque.
