Muffler and tip only, save money for rims and stereo .

Did my exhaust a year ago and it still sounds great with no drone. I went with the magnaflow tip. Mounted the tip high so it looks like a cat back system. Stock hight is way to low.

What does the resonator do? Is the truck louder or quieter with it? Also, what does the length of the muffler have to do with the sound out the tailpipe?

Just had my Magnaflow 12256 (18") installed yesterday with a 3" tip. The sound is actually not as loud as I anticipated. However, I've only driven about 10 miles since the install so I guess the thing will break in a bit over time and get louder. Nonetheless, I hear no drone when cruising and I'm excited to get this thing broken in.

Did you leave the resonator in place or remove it?

I left the resonator in place...I don't want it to be too loud. Ultimately I'm happy with it right now. The muffler has added some sound, but not enough to become anoying.

Great! I'm not interested in having an overly loud exhaust system either and it sounds like the resonator keeps the cabin noise to a minimum or eliminates it completely.

Thanks for the info

Did you use your existing exhaust outlet? In other words, did you change the diameter of your exhaust pipe after or before the new Magnaflow muffler?

Thanks!

I had the shop just cut out the old muffler and weld the new one to the existing pipes. Then they cut the end of the pipe to weld on the tip. In other words, everything is stock except the muffler and tip.

I just did the magnaflow 18' 2.5 in and 2.5 dual out.
pulled out the resonator. Around 2,000 and 3,000 rpms it is to loud in the cab while accelerating (drone?). Once up to speed (no load) it sounds perfect in the cab.
I am torn if i want to put the resonator back in yet. might wait until i get 500 miles on it and broken in. Drone might go away.

Leave it off it will only drone when under a load and sounds way better when passing.Won't get any louder than it is now.

I am trying, but just cant take it. The drone, or should i say harmonic frequency. i can feel it in the gas peddle through my shoe and almost in my teeth. It seems to be working like a pipe organ. as soon as i hit 2,000 RPMS the humming (drone) starts. after about 2,500 it starts to go away. I hope the resonator breaks the frequency up or changes it enough that the drone goes away. Hopefully it does not move the drone into a different frequency, meaning after i put the resonator back in the drone will be at 3,000 rpms. we shall see. It is going in today at 3:30. And if that does not fix i am screwed. uncle sam is getting me for a few grand this year. so much for anymore modifications to the tundra.

I just installed a Banks system. it bolts up directly behind the resonator. Less than an hour to install. My stock aluminized system was corroding with the salty roads pretty badly. I almost went with a Magnaflow muffler, but it was going to be welded in with steel wire and a friend had recommended the Banks system.

I have read all the talk about how increasing the pipe diameter would hurt midrange torque, but I had heard otherwise. I drive across the mountains every day, so I knew it would be a good test.

With the stock exhaust system, I would climb the hill in third gear, overdrive off. If my speed got down to 45 MPH, it was hard to accelerate back to 50 MPH without downshifting to 2nd and wasting gas, so I was always gingerly accelerating, unlocking the torque converter, but trying not to hit the downshift point on the throttle position sensor.

After installing the exhaust, I can go from 40-65 MPH uphill easily without downshifting, because the throttle position is not close to the shift point. I have more midrange torque, not less.

At wide open throttle it accelerates to redline, like a 32-valve V8 is supposed to. I highly recommend the Banks exhaust system. They have engineers that know what they're doing. They didn't just throw it together.

It is somewhat noisy, but my son didn't notice the difference with the stereo off until I mentioned it to him. I won't bother telling the wife...

Great info rando! I like the hill climb/down shift test !
Question--did you go dual ?? if so did you have to remove your spare tire ?? Do you have a part number?

OK. I got the resonator back in and the drone is gone . Not totally gone but it is no longer annoying. I am happy with it. It might be a hair quieter out the duals. Still sounds mean when you get on it. Set off a car alarm in a parking structure giving it a little romp.
I love how the magnafow stays pretty quiet under 2,000 rpms, neighbors are happy at 5:30am and you can barely hear the rumble (without resonator) . The mid range feels like it pulls harder also around the 3,000 to 4,000rpm range. Gas mileage is worst because of my foot, sure sounds good . And the spare is still where it belongs. I know most out there recommend the 22” magna.. But I am not sure if the 22” would have been loud enough for me (42 year old engineer). The 18” 2.5 in--dual 2.5 out W/resonator seems to do the trick for me!($400.00 muffler shop) Pretty much the same thing JSHOT21 said about his 18” magna.

Thanks for all the info out there. This forum sure makes decision making easier. I should have listened to everyone about drone in the cab and the resonator. I thought how bad could it be compaired to the 454 chevy crewcab dually i drove around for years with exhaust mods. I learned the hard way. I will never dought the forum gods again

Hope that helped you make up your mind.

DRONE-I wounder if it comes down to the double cabs needing the resonator to kill the drone due to the increased exhaust length and the, as my friend said, the pipe organ effect???????????.
