||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Tundra: A couple of audio options are available on the Tundra. The Deluxe AM/FM Electronically Tuned Radio (ETR) with 4 speakers comes standard on the Regular Cab and SR5 Access Cab. The Premium 3-in-1 AM/FM ETR/Cassette/CD with 6-disc in-dash changer with 6 speakers comes standard on the Limited Access Cab. A Deluxe AM/FM ETR/Cassette with 4 speakers is optional on the Regular Cab and the Premium 3-in-1 AM/FM ETR/Cassette/CD with 6-disc in-dash changer with 6 speakers is optional on the SR5 Access Cab. There are no Toyota optional audio units for the Limited models. Additional audio options include:
The factory radios that include 6 speakers have a separate head unit and amplifier. On these configurations the standard Toyota radio harness connections plug into the amplifier instead of the radio/ head unit. A pigtail on the amplifier with 20-Pin connection, connects the amplifier to the head unit. Sequoia: The standard radio in the Sequoia has separate head unit and amplifier. The standard Toyota radio harness connections plug into the amplifier instead of the radio/ head unit. The JBL Premium units with 10 speakers have 2 amplifiers, one amplifier for the front door speakers and a second amplifier for the rear door speakers. Toyota

What size aftermarket head unit will fit in the Tundra and Sequoia? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Tundra and Sequoia dash opening are 2 DIN, also called Double DIN or Dual DIN. The opening is approximately 7 inches wide by 4 inches high. DIN is the acronym for Deutsche Industrial Norm, which is the German industrial standardization for radio dimensions, approximately 7 inches wide by 2 inches high. When installing smaller sized head units, a pocket or faceplate can be used to fill the remainder of the dash opening. |

How to add preamp outputs to the factory head unit in a Tundra. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
If your factory unit has an external factory amplifier, you can add pre-amp outputs to you factory head unit by tapping into the low-level harness connections between the head unit and the external factory amplifier. This modification adds a front and rear preamp (low level) output jack pairs to the factory head unit, leaving the external amp in place. The
external amp must be left in place to feed the power
connections to the head unit. On the Toyota audio systems
with an external amplifier, the main harness connections,
connect to the external amplifier. A pig-tail witha 20-pin
connector runs from the amplifier to the head unit. This
pigtail harness contains the following wires:
Pin Layout:
For each preamp output pair you want to add to your head unit, you will need a pair of female RCA sockets. 1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. 2. Follow the instructions to remove the factory head unit (Toyota Tundra Factory Stereo Removal). 3. Take the 20-pin connector that plugs into the radio and carefully cut the external covering on the wire harness to expose 2 - 3 inches of the enclosed wires, near the connector. 4. Locate the
following wires, which will all be together on one side
of the connector :
5. Splice a 18 or 20G Black wire into the White wire (pin 16 on the Connector), leaving it in continuity. This will be the common ground (-) connection for each of the female RCA plug. Make your spliced-in wire long enough so you can tie all the leads from negative leads from the RCA plugs to this wire. Solder and tape or shrink wrap your splice in the White wire. 6. Splice a Red 18 or 20G wire into the Black wire1 (pin 8 on the connector). Connect the spliced-in wire to the positive lead of one of the female RCA jacks. Connect a short Black 18 or 20G wire to the negative lead on the same RCA jack. This will be the Front Right RCA Jack. Solder and tape or shrink wrap your splice in the Black wire.
7. Splice a White 18 or 20G wire into the Blue wire1 (pin 9 on the connector). Connect the spliced-in wire to the positive lead of the second female RCA jacks. Connect a short Black 18 or 20G wire to the negative lead on the same RCA jack. This will be the Front Left RCA Jack. Solder and tape or shrink wrap your splice in the Blue wire. 8. Splice a Red 18 or 20G wire into the Green wire1(pin 18 on the connector). Connect the spliced-in wire to the positive lead of the third the female RCA jacks. Connect a short Black 18 or 20G wire to the negative lead on the same RCA jack. This will be the Rear Right RCA Jack. Solder and tape or shrink wrap your splice in the Green wire. 9. Splice a White 18 or 20G wire into the Yellow wire1 (pin 19 on the connector). Connect the spliced-in wire to the positive lead of one of the female RCA jacks. Connect a short Black 18 or 20G wire to the negative lead on the same RCA jack. This will be the Rear Left RCA Jack. Solder and tape or shrink wrap your splice in the Yellow wire. 10. Connect all four Black wires from the RCA jacks to the Black wire you spliced into the harness in step 5. Solder and tape or shrink wrap; or secure with a wire nut and tape. 11. Check all your connections. wrap the harness back up with electrical tape. 12. Plug RCA interconnects into your new RCA jacks and connect to the appropriate connections on your aftermarket amplifier(s). Connect your speakers to your aftermarket amplifiers. 13. Reconnect and re-install the radio. Reconnect the connections to the integration panel. Reconnect the battery cable. 14. Test. Complete re-assembly. Note: This modification may cause a floating ground loop in the audio system causing some noise. Any noise induced shouldbe able to be resolved with a Ground Loop Isolator. Ground Loop Isolators can be purchased from Radio Shack (PN #27-054) or from Parts Express (PN #265-012) 1 You can either cut these wires or leave them in continuity. If you cut them there will be NO low-level signal passed from the head unit to the factory amplifier. If you leave them in continuity, you will need to make sure that the factory amplifier is NOT connected to the speakers. However, be aware that leaving them in continuity may induce some noise in the system and cause a voltage drop at the preamp output jacks. (Courtesy of TundraSolutions.com member tundra-gearhead) |

Where can I install an aftermarket amplifier in my Tundra? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
There are a number of locations you can use. However,the most common place is under the front bench seat or passenger side captain's chair. TundraSolutions.com members have also installed amps under the driver side captain's chair, in the storage compartment under the passenger side rear seat, and on the rear wall behind the rear seat. There is room for a 14" x 14" x 2 3/4" amp under the passenger side captain's chair and room for a 9 1/2" x 16" x 4" amp in the storage compartment under the passenger side rear seat. |
