  Fog Lights

What bulbs are installed in my fog lights?

The OEM fog light bulb, in the Tundra and Sequoia, is a 9006 51w halogen bulb.

Can I use higher wattage bulbs in my fog lights?

A number of Tundra owners have upgraded the OEM fog light bulbs to 9006 80w bulbs with no problems to the stock wiring or the fog light lenses.

Use of higher wattage bulbs in the fog lights may require an upgraded fog light wiring harness. Before installing high wattage bulbs consider the current draw and heat output of the bulbs.

Can I adjust my fog lights?

There is an adjustment screw on the back of the fog light that allows you to adjust the fog lights.

How to modify the Tundra fog light circuit to have complete on/off control.

The circuit can be modified so the fog lights can be turned on and off when you want. The correct instructions to perform this modification depend on if your Tundra has Daytime Running Lights (DRL's) or not.

Instructions for Tundra's without DRL's:
This method changes the power source for the fog lamp switch which in turn powers the relay, from that supplied by the low beam circuit of the headlight dimmer switch, over to being supplied by the instrument panel light circuit. This does not bypass the switch. The switch works exactly the same as before, with the exception that the fog lamps can be turned on anytime that the head light switch is in either the park or headlamp position. The ignition switch does not have to be on. The light in the fog lamp switch is on under the same conditions as stock, which is anytime the dashlights are on.

1. Remove the (4) 10mm bolts that hold on the lower dash panel. Now with a little effort, the panel will pull out. The lower dash panel has 4 spring clips near the top where it connects to the upper part of the dash. Gently pull and pry until they snapped out. Let it hang down.
2. Remove the panel with the fog light switch and the panel light dimmer switch, by pulling towards you. Only clips hold this in.
3. On the backside of the fog light switch, cut the red wire with a yellow tracer, about 2 inches towards the harness.
4. Tape off the cut end (harness side) so that no shorts will occur.
5. Locate the green wire on the back of the panel light dimmer switch. Use a 3M Scotchlok connector or strip the wires a little and solder and tape them to connect the red wire with the yellow tracer, coming out of the fog light switch, to the green wire.
6. Test lights and re-install panels.

How to add fog lights to a Sequoia SR5.

Some Sequoia SR5 owners have added Sequoia Limited fog lights, a relay, and installed the Tundra fog light switch in their Sequoia SR5's. Parts needed are 81220-0C020 Sequoia Limited Fog Lamp Assy - Driver side, 81210-0C020 Sequoia Limited Fog Lamp Assy - Passenger side, 84160-0C010 Tundra Fog Light Switch, a 12V 30-amp relay, some wire, a fuse holder, a 15-amp fuse and some wire connectors. Cost of parts is around $300.

Method 1: Wiring the fog lights so they can be turned on with the parking lights, low beams or headlights.

Method 2: Wiring the fog lights so they work like the factory installed fog lights (on with low beams only).

1. Install the fog switch. The switch has a lamp that may be used in two ways - it can be turned on by applying power from a separate switch (i.e. parking light switch as in this particular installation, etc.) or it can be turned on when the fog switch itself is activated. When the switch was purchased, it was setup for the former (probably by default). For the latter, the lamp (in the white circular holder) must be moved to the position of the black one.

Pins 1 & 3 are for lamp power, 2 & 4 are the actual switch posts. When the position of the lamp is changed (Mode 2), lamp power must be applied to pins 2 & 5.

1a. Connect Pin# 3 above with the green wire of the illuminator rheostat located right next to the fog switch position.
1b. For adjustable intensity, connect Pin# 1 above to the white with a green stripe wire from the rheostat. For full intensity at all times, connect Pin# 1 to the white wire from the rheostat.
1c. Connect Pin# 2 with the low beam wire from the combo switch (stalk) connector. This wire is colored yellow with a red stripe. It is of heavier gauge than most of the other wires in the connector (probably 14awg). You can use your voltmeter to see that this wire will have approximately 12V when the low headlights are on and almost 0V when high beam is on.
1d. Pin# 4 will supply power to activate the relay. Run wire from Pin# 4 through the firewall and into the engine compartment.

2. Mount the relay close to the engine compartment fuse box. Mounting the relay close to the fuse box, allows you to use the existing fog light wiring in the vehicle.

3. Wire the relay. A 4 pin relay was used in this example, some relays will have 5 pins. Pin numbering scheme is normally 1+2 for the coil pins and 3+5 for the switch pins but may be different depending on the vendor. The relay has two pins for the coil (coil pins) and two pins for the switch (switch pins). When electrical current runs through the coil, the switch which is normally open, will close.

3a. Connect one of the coil pins of the relay to the wire from Pin# 4 of the fog switch.
3b. Connect the other coil pin to ground.
3c. Connect one of the switch pins to the pink wires of the left and right fog lamps. These wires (pink with silver marks for driver side and pink with dual silver marks for the passenger side) can be traced from the lamp connector up to the relays and fuses box in the engine compartment. Use a voltmeter with very pointed pins to poke the wires (from the bundle) to confirm that they connect to the lamps. Cut them and connect them together to one of the switch pins in the relay.
3d. Connect the other switch pin to the power terminal in the relays and fuses box in the engine compartment. In this wire, install a fuse holder with a 15amp fuse. This wire is also covered with heat-resistant tubing.

4. Install the fog lamps. Pop out the black plastic plugs in the fog light holes from behind, and just push in the fog lights till they snap in.

5. Push on the light connectors and you are done.

Installing the Fog Light Switch
1.Remove the (4) 10mm bolts that hold on the lower dash panel. Now with a little effort, the panel will pull out. Let it hang down.
2. Remove the panel with the FL switch and the panel light dimmer switch, by pulling towards you. Only clips hold this in.
3. Locate the GREEN wire on the back of the panel light dimmer switch. Using 16 gauge wire, Splice the GREEN wire and feed it to both the #2 and #3 pins. Use a flip over type wire splice connector to connect this. You can just use a large female connector which will fit over both.

4. Splice the GREEN & WHITE wire and send it to #1 pin. Use a flip over type wire splice connector to connect.
5. Now run about 3 to 4 feet of 16 gage wire from the #4 pin out to the engine compartment through the rubber firewall grommet. This wire connects to relay slot #1 (see relay instructions)
6. Pull out the blank in the panel next to the dimmer switch and push in the tundra fog light switch. You may have to snip off a little stub on one side of the switch for it to slide in, but once you slide it in it will snap into place.

Wiring the Relay
1.Use a 30 amp driving light relay with a screw hole for mounting. Some relays have two light posts one for each individual light and some have one post that you just split the wire to go to each light.

#5 To ground on fender wall.

Wiring the Fog Lights
1.Next to the engine compartment (outside) there is a bundle of wires without the black plastic wire loom, locate the pink wires. (Pink with silver marks). There are 4 pink wires - 2 with a single silver band and the other 2 with dual silver bands. You will also notice that for the two pink wires with a single band, one is thicker than the other. The same is true for the pink wires with dual bands.
Here are the two wires you need:

1. The THINNER pink wire with ONE SILVER BAND
2. The THICKER pink wire with DUAL SILVER BANDS

These wires (pink with silver marks for driver side and pink with dual silver marks for the passenger side) can be traced from the lamp connector up to the relays and fuses box in the engine compartment. Install the relay close to this box so you can use the existing fog lamp wires.
1. Cut them and connect them to the relay, using slot #3 and one to slot #4.
2. Connect slot #5 to the power terminal in the relays and fuses box in the engine compartment. In this wire, about 5 inches from the terminal, installed a fuse holder with a 15amp fuse.
3. Pop out the black plastic plugs in fog light holes from behind, and just push in the fog lights till they snap in.
4. Plug in the connectors and your done.
