How to install under cab lights.

A number of Tundra owners have installed aftermarket auxiliary or driving lights under the cab to illuminate the ground below the doors. To have the lights turn on when the doors are opened they have been connected to the cargo light circuit using a relay.

1. Remove the driver's seat, the doorsill protectors and the trim on the driver's side pillar.
2. Locate the red and black wire in the pillar. This wire provides power to the Cargo Light. Tap into the red and black wire, of course leaving it in continuity. This new wire will be the relay coil trigger.
3. Locate a convenient location to install a SPDT relay. Mount the relay and run your relay coil trigger wire to the relay.
4.Connect your lead from the red/black wire to a pin 86 of a relay. Connect pin 30 of the relay to a constant fused positive power source from the battery. Connect pin 85 of the relay to ground.
5. Run a fused wire from pin 87 of the relay through the grommet under the driver's seat and under the vehicle, this wire will carry the positive voltage to your lights. This wire will be exposed to the elements so either run the wire in wire loom or be sure to use 16 gauge wire and be careful not to scrape off the insulation running it through the grommet and under the truck.
6. Connect the wire you ran out the floor grommet to the positive wire of the lights. Ground the negative wire of the lights.
7. Test lights. Replace driver's seat and trim pieces.

How to wire the lights in a camper shell to work under control of the cargo light switch.

This modification is similar to the one documented above to add under cab lights controlled by the cargo light circuit.

5. Run a fused wire from pin 87 of the relay through the grommet under the driver's seat and under the vehicle, this wire will carry the positive voltage to your shell lights. Continue running the wire up behind the left taillight to a little hole that Toyota put just under the rail cap and into the bed. This will be a long wire run exposed to the elements, so either run the wire in wire loom or use 16 gauge wire and be careful not to scrape off the insulation running it through the grommet and under the truck.
6. Connect the wire you ran into the bed to the positive wire of the camper shell lights. Ground the negative wire of the camper shell lights.
7. Test lights. Replace driver's seat and trim pieces.

How to add an under hood light to a Tundra or Sequoia.

Either purchase a small light or get an under hood light from another vehicle, such as a Ford or Cadillac. Connect the light to the hood frame and wire the light to a mercury switch attached to the hood, or a hood pin switch. Connect the switch to the light and the battery, fusing the wire near the battery.

How to wire additional back-up lights on a Tundra.

1. Remove the driver's seat, and the doorsill protectors.
2.Lift up the carpet, and find the connector closest to the door. The "keeper" and connector can be released with some pulling and a screwdriver. Going into the connector you'll find (2) red/black wires, and coming out the other side, going into the harness heading through the grommet in the floor, you'll see (2) red/yellow wires. You can tap into any one of those wires, of course leaving it in continuity. This new wire will be the relay coil trigger. Connect this wire to pin 86 of a SPDT relay.
3. Connect pin 30 of the relay to a constant fused positive power source from the battery. Connect pin 85 of the relay to ground.
4. Run a fused wire from pin 87 of the relay through the grommet under the drivers seat and under the vehicle, this wire will carry the positive voltage to your lights. Continue running the wire along the left frame rail back to the positive connection on your new back-up lights. This will be a long wire run exposed to the elements so either run the wire in wire loom or be sure to use 16 gauge wire and be careful not to scrape off the insulation running it through the grommet and under the truck.
4. Ground the negative wire of the new back-up lights.
5. Test lights. Replace driver's seat and trim pieces.

How to get more light from the map lights (personal lights).

We haven't found a source for higher wattage bulbs for the personal lights. However there is a simple modification you can do to get more light from the personal lights.

Between the bulb and the plastic cover there is a metal plate. The metal plate has a small hole in it and it's design is assumed to serve two purposes. First the plate reduces the heat between the bulb and the lense and second the small hole directs the light from the bulb. To increase the brightness of the light you can remove the metal plate.

1. To remove the plastic cover, slide a small screwdriver or the leg of a pair of tweezers up against the hinge pin (see diagram below).
2. Work out the hinge pin on both the front and back of each lense.
3. Remove the metal plate.
4. Replace the lenses.
