How-To Install a Hellwig Anti-Sway
Bar on a '02 Toyota Tundra
by tremo
Installation Notes:
Aside from reviewing the Installation Instructions, be
sure to read the bottom half of the IMPORTANT NOTE (the
one in RED ink!) I've listed the more important gotcha's
below...
- #1: This installation uses locknut style
nuts and NOT acorn style nuts on the end links.
As such, DISREGARD the note about torquing the
acorn nuts to 30 ft. lbs. Instead, follow the
note that reads "Tighten the locknuts just
until the bushings begin to bulge slightly, DO
NOT OVERTIGHTEN the end links or the bushings
will become damaged." See relevant picture
below.
#2: This kit includes zinc plated THICK
washers: "....assemble the end link so these
[thick] washers are on the vehicle or frame
bracket end of the end links and not the sway bar
end of the end links." Note that I'm
pointing to this reference in one of the pictures
below...
#3: "To avoid D-bushings squeaking,
apply a small amount of grease to the inside of
the D-shaped bushings before installing the
bushings onto the bar".
#4: Be very CAREFUL around the brake
lines and be sure not to crimp them with the
U-bolts. See picture below for proper placement
of U-bolts on differential.
#5: The Torque Rates provided on the
Installation Instructions do NOT match any of the
bolt or nut sizes in the kit. We used 40-45 ft.
lbs. for the 3/4" nuts and 15-18 ft. lbs.
for the 11/16" nuts (J-bolt). However, YMMV,
so use your best judgement!
#6: Do NOT overtighten the nut connecting
the J-bolt to the frame - use 15-18 ft. lbs. max.
(The bolt will start digging into the frame if
you overtighten it.)
#7: And the most important note of all,
drink a few beers and have fun! :)
