Foglight Mod for 03’ Tundra with DRL

by Rizico

Items Needed:

1-wire tap

1-wire cap or black tape

1-female spade connector(Optional)

1-Mini Add-a-circuit(Optional)

12" of red primary wire

Tools:

Wire Cutters

Scissors

Ratchet with 10mm socket

Crimper

Phillips screw-driver

Steps:

  1. Remove the lower part of the drivers side of the dash (4 10mm bolts)
  2. Remove the bottom part of the steering column cover (3 phillips screws, 1 silver,
  3. 2 black.)

  4. Find the connector that goes into the bottom of the Combination switch (blinker stalk).
  5. There will be a Bunch of wires going into it, but you only will use one of the green with black stripe wires, and the white wire with black stripe, you will need to cut the 3" piece of rubber surrounding the wires using small scissors, careful not to cut any wires!!
  6. [The green with black wire you need to use is the one furthest to the front of the truck if you are looking up at the still connected connector, to test to see if it is the correct one, use 12V tester and find which of the green with black stripe wires is grounded when the Low beams are on. It should be the one towards the front of the truck, as I said.]
  7. Cut the green with black stripe wire in half, like so:

  1. Cap the end that continues into the truck, as you will not use it anymore.

  1. Now you need to tie the other end of the green with black wire into the white with black wire using a wire tap. [the black with white wire is a constant ground wire, if you want to be sure it’s the right one, check with a 12V tester.]

  1. You are now done with the switch part, other than putting everything back together, and are ˝ way done!!
  2. Now you need to locate the fog relay, it’s the 2nd on from the bottom on the far left.
  3. Remove the fog relay, and get the piece of red primary wire, you will need to.

  1. Bend the positive(+) coil side of the relay out about 90 degrees as shown, careful not to break it off, if you do, you will have to buy another.

  1. Once this is done, connect one end of the red primary wire to the bent out, positive (+) side of the relay, I have it hooked up like this for experimental purposes only, I suggest using a female spade connector, it should slide right over the leg of the relay, I will change mine tomorrow, it’s just to late to go to the store…
  2. Now you can re-install the relay in it’s original place, if the bent leg interferes with the other relays, just try to bend it more to make it clear them.

  1. The other end of the primary wire must now be tied into one of the power outlet fuses, I suggest using on of those "add a circuits" and I will eventually put one on it, but like I said, it was late and I was anxious, so I just did it the cheap way and wrapped the wire around on leg of the fuse and reinserted it.
  2. Now you are done!!! The fog lights should now allow you to switch them on and off using the stalk switch as long as the key is in the "acc or on position", Test and put everything back together.

On w/parking lights

 On with Low beams

On with High beams

I did this mainly to use the Fogs along w/the High beams, It is extra "bright" now!!

Notes: I saw no problems with the way this works, But just in case, here is what you did: The green with black stripe wire that you cut supplied a ground to the foglight switch only when the headlights were on and on dims. By cutting the wire and grounding the switch side, you are supplying a constant ground to the foglight switch, that is why they can be turned on and off no matter if the headlights are on or not.

Connecting the red primary wire to the fuse for the power outlet, you are adding a circuit that only has positive(+) power when the ignition is on (just like the power outlets), and by connecting the other end to the positive(+) coil side of the relay, you are connecting an "on with ignition" connection, and when you switch the foglight switch to the on position, you are completing the constant ground that we connected earlier, thus activating the relay, and turning on your foglights.

At first I was concerned with the low gauge/amp rating of the power outlet wires, but the wire we connected to the fuse is just a switching wire, it is not the wire that provides power to the foglights, so it will be fine.

This mod should work on 03 Tundras with DRl's, if it does not, please let me know. If you have any questions, please feel free to PM or email me, Thanks for looking at my mod.
