Muth Signal Mirror Install - 2005 Tundra DC Limited

Submitted by Bob259

The installation of Muth Signal mirrors will not only make your Tundra stand out from others but they also increase your safety and visibility while driving and making lane changes.

You can get full information and availability from the Muth mirror site at Muth Company, LLC. At the site you can also print the detailed instructions for the install, which were comprehensive and easy to follow. Click on this link to access the Tundra page and view the different kits Signal® Mirror Kits and then view the install instructions at Automotive Signal® Mirror Instructions

While the instructions recommend this should be done by a ‘professional installer’, anyone with some mechanical skills and tools should be able to handle it. I really took my time and had to call their tech support, which is great, on a few questions and the total time it took me was 3.5 hours. If I had my door panels off before and didn’t have to hunt for some tools it would have easily been done in 2 – 2.5 hours.

A listing of the tools you will need are located in the link above under  ‘Mirror Instructions’

Now to the installation

To remove your door panel you must first remove the three (3) Phillips heads and two (2) push pins at the rear of the panel.  Carefully remove the plugs/covers covering the Phillips head screws on the front of the door panel and remove the screws, one under the front under a plug, one under the door release lever and one under the arm rest.  Next carefully remove the cup/plastic piece under the release lever and lock button. It is secured in on the top and bottom sides about 3/8-1/2" in from the rear once you pop the rear out you need to slide it to the rear as the front is held in by a plastic clip that goes under the panel to avoid the front popping out. At this point you can slowly work the door panel off the plastic retaining pins (approximately 10 total on the front, rear and bottom of the door panel) and the two rear push retainers.  Once free carefully lift up the panel and support it till you unclip the wires going to the door lamp, lock and window assembly.  The top Tweeter panel pulls out as well.

The tabs are located just above and below the pivot point where the lock and release handle are located. See the black area that projects in to the lock lever.

Push Pins

You will then be looking at the door as pictured below:

Unclip the power going to the mirror and remove the three (3) 10mm nuts holding your Mirror assembly on. BE CAREFUL NOT TO DROP YOUR MIRROR.

Follow the instructions and pictures in the install documentation for removing the mirror assembly from its housing. HINT: on the installation of the new mirror the drive pins are tabbed and will only push back into the mirror sockets if they are aligned properly. Be sure your tabs on the pins align with the slots in the socket on the mirror assembly. After having problems with this portion I called their tech line and they had me heat the sockets and pins with a hair dryer and carefully pop the pins in the mirror back Vs the way called out in the instructions, this worked very well for me and I only had to ensure they were proper aligned over the motor actuator when I pushed them in and reseated the mirror center.

NOTE: Be very careful when reinstalling the drive pins. If these drive pins break they are NOT available by themselves, you can only buy them in the whole mirror assemble.

It’s all down hill now!!!!

Next reinstall your mirror to the truck and run you wires in the door. I used cable ties to secure all my wires and make a good-looking installation.

The next step is to remove the rubber door tube and fish the wire out the front of the door where the wires come though.  To do this you easily you will have to remove the speaker assembly.

Then disconnect the plugs seen above (Blue &  Gray on passenger side and Gray & White on drivers side ) behind the kick panel. Undo the tube from the A pillar side and pull the plugs out so you can feed your wire mirror wires to the inside of the cab Via the same path you other door wires take.

Then remove the tape from the inside portion of the tube and run the wire, ensuring its not kinked and protected in the tube. Re apply the tape.

Pass the plugs back into the truck and reinsert them into their proper junction block and reinsert both ends of the tube in to the A pillar and door front, ensuring they are in and no wires are pinched.

Next separate the black and red wires. The Black wire is a ground and can be grounded on each side just above the junction block shown to a relay that is grounded on each side of the vehicle.

In the picture below you will see the main bundle of wires in the plastic loom that come up from the sill plate to the Fuse Junction box and runs behind the connector for the gray and white plug going to the door.

I found it much easier to find my turn signal wires here and connect at this point Vs above the junction box as indicated in the instructions.

The ‘Left Turn Signal’ (drivers side) is the green wire with the black stripe and the ‘Right side Signal’ wire is the green wire with the yellow stripe. I then turned on each turn signal and used a test light to probe and verify I had the correct wire. Once I was sure it taped over my probe and found the wire again above the junction block in the kick panel side and used the supplied wire connector. Run the (red) wire across from your passenger door mirror and do the same for your left mirror.

You’re done!!!!

See the results.

Enjoy.
