This is a discussion thread titled "Portable after market GPS", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hey guys. I know a lot of you might have wanted a GPS unit in your new Tundra but I have had this one for about two years now and it's the cat's meow when it comes to after market GPS units. It cost only $500 and it has ALL the software already installed for the WHOLE continental US and Canada. PLUS, listen to this, it has a separate 10 gig hard drive for a MP3 Player. That's right just download all your songs, up to 5,000 of them from your computer into the GPS system and it plugs right into the radio AUX plug and it plays right through your truck speakers. If you have a song playing or comedy acts like we also have downloaded for long trips the song will stop and the GPS tells you where your next turn is and then the song continues. ALSO Lowrance GIVES you FREE software update by downloading them. They send you a email notice if a new download is available. I looked hard and long and this is the best unit I could find. I have used Lowrance electronics on my boat for almost 30 years now so they are NOT new to GPS etc................ Here it is shown in my old Ford Escape before I traded it in. But it fits REAL nice on the Tundra's dashboard where they have that cut out grill in the middle of the dash.
I went to fry's and got a Plenio portable GPS. I prefer big screen GPS since i do have a BIG truck......hee.....hee.....
Its a 7" GPS with video and game unit. It also use a SD card. I paid $299.99+tax Plan to buy a rear camera and hook it up.........
in california, its illegal to have them unit on the front window, so I will need to get a goose neck mount....

angel1,
Does your GPS unit have an input for a rear cam ??
I will use a gooseneck mount too ... since I have a column shifter and a reg cab.
Question to all ... I am looking for a good GPS with a rear camera input for a 2007 Tundra ???
660 in my truck as well... it dose all that and more! Even maps of Mexico! I don't know where they get the map info to program it but it even has residential driveways and random roads that amaze me that they are on it.
I just bought the Lowrance Iway 250C last week and absolute love it. Yours has more features than mine but for only $200 I cant imagine a better deal than mine.
Got the Garmin Nuvi 680. Love the MSN feature that show area gas stations and prices, theaters and show times and some neat traffic info. In dash from factory is nice but I drive 3 different vehicles and need to take my Nav. with me.

My other passion:
2003 Corvette convertible, Millenium Yellow, Z51, 6 sp manual. Lots of goodies.
Nice, the 680 is $500 more than I paid for my 660 ($499). I did not think the MSN was worth the extra $500 though it soounds cool, I also though I didnt need the bluetooh but i like it!

I have the Garmin Legend CX, along w/ the City Navigator software. Truly portable, waterproof, etc. About the size of a deck of cards. When you get to the trail head, take it with you.
But that's WAY too small for my eye sight when driving. That is the #1 reason I purchased the Lowrance iWAY 500c unit is because it has a 5" color screen.
This unit also has OVER 5 million point of interest (POI). You can find all the gas stations, restaurants, hotels, campgrounds, stores, banks you name it. You can also ask it to not only find the POI where you are but you can put the cursor on a area you will be traveling (any amount of miles ahead) and it will give you the POI's of that area.
