This is a discussion thread titled "Temp/Perm GPS Install (VERY non-professional)", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I was looking for a way to install my GPS. (Garmin 330) We use it in my wife’s 4Runner also, so it needed to be able to be moved from one vehicle to the other, but I didn’t like the cable running down from the rearview mirror when I stuck it on the windshield. So, yes, I wanted to have my cake and eat it too. The suction cup portion of it is too big to stick on any place on the dash that would hold it. The Garmin comes with a suction disk that can tape to your dash and you can stick the suction cup to it. Tape/glue/etc on my dash is also unacceptable. That little cubby just in front of the shift lever is an awesome place to locate it, but the area is too small to accept the suction disk and the regular suction cup wouldn’t stick to it.
So here is my redneck-engineering solution I came up with: Yes, this is Redneck, but it works. I found out an old string spindle from my weed-eater fits perfectly in the bottom of one of the two cup holders in the front of the center console. I ground the top of spindle down until it was level all the way around. Then I removed the tape backing and used quick drying epoxy to stick the suction disk to the weed-eater spindle. The spindle clicks down in the cup holder and the GPS suction cup clamps down to the suction disk. The suction disk is larger than the spindle so, all you see is the black disk and not the orange spindle. It sits about ½-3/4 inch above the top of the cup holder and it's solid as a rock.. I ran the antenna out the passenger door jamb up to the roof in the weather stripping. It comes under the glove compartment and under center console up into the cup holder. (The center console just pops out for those that didn’t know) The only wires you see are the power cable going to the 12v plug and about 3 inches of the antenna wire. You do have to get used to looking down at the GPS if you’re used to looking up at the windshield. But, it’s a nice temporarily/permanent install. I can take pics if you want, but I didn’t think they would be needed..
I have a portable MIO 310x and I take it from truck to truck when needed. It was cheap, works great and I just ordered the upgrade CD for $14.95....bargain!
I have the garmin 660 mounter over the passnger seatbelt/airbag light their is just enuff room for it to fit, make sure both surfaces are clean and put some force when clamping and it will stay on. If they are not clean it will fall off in a few days.
