This is a discussion thread titled "Anyone installed a Avic Z1 or Z2 themselfs?", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I am seriously looking at the Avic Z1/Z2 and want to install it myself but need some direction and guidance from someone that has done it before on a 00-06 Tundra DC w/ JBL amp no RES. Would like to know if there is any adapters out there to "plug and play" without splicing wires if possible. Also, how does the GPS antenna install in place on the roof? Do you need to drill a hole in the sheet metal? Anything and everything needed to install the Avic Z1/Z2 would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Nobody has attempted this install themselves? I find that hard to believe! Anyone with some advice on how to do this correctly and have the factory steering wheel controls function with the AVIC Z1/Z2?
I have installed the Avic Z2 myself in my 06 AC w/JBL's. Unfortunately i believe there are no wire harness's availbile. Could just be the year of my truck but i went to 2 different stereo shops, got 2 different harness's that their computers said works for my truck and neither one worked. if you have the factory JBL amp then you will need to bypass this because it will not work with aftermarket head units. If you look through my photos i have a picture of the factory toyota stereo wiring harness and listed the color codes. I spent a lot of time testing each wire, even freeked out and paid TS for the wiring diagrams, which didnt help much. As for the GPS antenna, i mounted this inside the cab on the dashboard far left corner. The local stereo shop said this is how they mount all of their installs. I have had very good luck with the signal, no problems through the glass. I know that TundraV8Georgia mounted his antenna outside his truck and says that he needed to for better signal. you should touch base with him and see how he ran his outside the cab. He is also very knowledgable when it comes to the Avic Z1/Z2 units. He helped me when i decided to make my purchase, answered all my questions. I believe there may be a way to intergrate the factory steering wheel controls. Dont know much about that. The next problem you will run in to will be locating the reverse signal wire and speed sensor wire. if you do a search on TS you should be able to find out where to locate those on your DC. mine were directly behind the factory stereo as a plug connector being unused. I would have to double check those wire colors its been a while since my install. All in all if you do your research ask more questions the install should go smoothly. feel free to send me PM if you have any questions. Good luck! oh by the way once you get that far, do a search for avic Z2 bypass. i created this thread to unlock the Z2.
I have been looking into navigations lately and what I came away with was that the Pioneer Avic Z-1/Z-2 were harder to bypass for some reason. I am prepared to buy another unit, but I had my heart set on the Pioneer unit. Can Pioneer units be easily bypassed like Eclipses' units?

see my profile pictures I've helped a lot of Ts members install the z1/z2
It's going to be plug and play well sort of still going to have to tap into speed cluster wire in order for the Gps to know the speed your tundra is traveling but that's easy to clip in.To your question there is a "plug and Play" but also depends on what system if you have Jbl your either going to bypass it or find the amp kit wiring for it.Take my advice I would Bypass that POS Jbl since i hate there system's entirely and knows Toyota system's don't serve any use to me on great sounding products.About your question on Gps antenna use the supplied antenna that comes with the Pioneer Navi it's a stick on magnet that is showen on my above Pict but please note add some 3m type backer to it so it doesn't scratch your truck. I have both the Xm Navi traffic antenna and the Navi one on my truck and signal strength has been great.
Erik
Cheers Erik

Ive installed in my sequoia myself. Seems worse than it is. steering wheel, sirius, back up camera and bluetooth. I just couldn't find the right speed sense wire, but unit works fine. used factory amps and sounds alot better than factory stereo
Used metra gsxl 70-8113 wire harness so no cutting and pac swi pioneer sony for wheel controls. wiring for control found at small stereo plug with only 3 wires in it
Vist AVIC411.com for info on the bypass and "flasher" unit. I'm thinking about getting this model since I'm not a real fan of DVD navigation - DVD access times mostly.

I was wondering how did you hook up you lines to the your factory amp? Dis you just use your speaker outputs? Did you put and components between them if you did? What year is your Sequioa? Do you have the wiring diagrams for the Seqioa? I am considering doing the same thing you have done?
