GPS and Navigation AssistanceOEM Car, Aftermarket and handheld navigation discussions.
This is a discussion thread titled "Garmin Nuvi 760 Anyone Have One?", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Decided to go the portable GPS route rather than the in-dash GPS unit due to cost and portability. Did some research on Garmin units and noticed that the 700 series is releaing this month. Anyone went and bought one yet? I am curious if it is significantly different than the rock solid 660 - 680 Nuvi's.
Nope, don't have a Nuvi 760. But currently own and use a Nuvi 660 and can attest to it's strengths. The best part is the wide screen... it just makes sense to be able to see a wider angle.
Other than a cool new body with softened/rounded edges, I believe it comes with many of the same features as the 660: text-to-speech, Bluetooth, FM traffic, MP3, etc.
Question though: They both come with preloaded maps. Is it possible to update maps? There are many "new" neighborhoods and cities (aka Ontario Hills, CA) which often don't show up. And sometimes the Nuvi shows we're "off-roading" when we're actually on the highway. Is this common to all navigation units?
I think I read somewhere that they offer updates when available from their website. I know some download to SD cards that you use to update your personal unit. You might check the Garmin website support area.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
I was at my local Circuit City store and they said that every year new maps are available to download to your Nuvi via CD software that CC sells or going onto the Nuvi website.
I also know that the new Nuvi will have wireless FM transmitter for voice navigation, MP3 capabilities. Now if they can only figure out how to get the back up camera capabilities incorporated into the Nuvi 760 that would be awesome....
Well, the 660 does have a SD card slot that I use for JPEGs and MP3s. I also use a simple USB cable to hook up the Nuvi to the laptop. However, I don't know if my maps are being updated through their proprietary update software. I'll have to look into it more.
My Nuvi does have the FM transmitter for voice navigation and mp3 through yoour car stereo... however, like most FM transmitters, I have found it useless in city driving because the so many frequencies are being used here (in Los Angeles County) that they often overlap, rendering the sound quality something to be desired. (Worked fine however during my 4,000 mi jaunt last Christmas to Illinois and back. Boy, I40 is pretty empty space!)
The only issue I have is the suction cup mount. It doesn't hang on very well in hot weather.
If I were wealthy, I'd probably purchase vehicles with navi included, or buy an aftermarket double-din sized navi. to install in dash. Much cleaner look IMO.
I want to purchase an in-dash Nav system. Before I picked up my new 2008 Camry SE-V6 last week, I had my salesguy scrambling for more than a week to find me even the sketchiest description or feature list of the Toyota Nav System so I could compare it feature by feature with aftermarket systems. He could find nothing. No brochure. No owners manual. No person at Toyota who could describe it even verbally. I called Toyota customer service directly and all they could say was the dealer will have pricing and availability information. They will not send me an owners manual, but I can buy one if I order it from the parts department.
Every aftermarket Nav company has all of the manuals on line even the install manuals.
What gives? The aftermarket units are probably a better buy, but I would still like to know for sure what the pros and cons of the Toyota system are before buying.
Do I need a security clearance to get this information? I have many questions such as:
Does the Toyota system use "dead reckoning" when GPS signals are lost?
Does it have "text-to-speech" capability to read out street names?
How detailed is the map database? The POI database? Street-level detail? Freeway exit detail?
Any help or points of contact to get more info would be very greatly appreciated.
I don't have one but I recently checked out the differences between the 660 and 760 on the Garmin website because I was thinking of getting a 660. Here are the diffs:
660 has no ability to store routes
760 can store 10 routes
660 cannot accept multiple destinations
760 accepts multiple destinations and auto-sorts best route to all
660 is not MSN Direct capable
760 is
660 has up to 7 hr batt life (Consumers reports measured 4.5hr)
760 has up to 5 hr batt life
660 has fold out antenna
760 does not and is very slightly smaller (by 0.1 inch)
Don't forget about the 650. I love mine, and use it on my motorcycles and cars. It doesn't have bluetooth, but I don't need it. I heard that Costco was having an online-only sale on the 650 for $299 for another week.
I too did what your doing and have done all the research and was down to either the Nuvi 770 or the Magellan 4250.... Well they didn't have the 770 anywhere and 760 was all they had ... made the comparrison with the two and went with the 760. So far i am not disappointed with it.... The handsfree phone usage, MP3 player (through SD Card) , and the Navigation were the things i focused on.... so It was cool!!!!!
