GPS and Navigation AssistanceOEM Car, Aftermarket and handheld navigation discussions.
This is a discussion thread titled "Navigation system for 06 LTD", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have a 06 LTD and would like to install a navigation system, But I had several questions and i apologize in advance if they're stupid. Would aftermarket ones work with the existing CD changer? Does the OEM have backup camera compatability? Where could I buy an OEM nav system for it and what would the part # be. Again, I apologize. I have been bitten by the accessoritis bug, and this GPs nav thing is new to me.
If your cd changer is in dash, then neither aftermarket nor oem will work. If it is external then you can use either (oem will need a lockpick or other similar device to make it work). The oem nav units do have backup camera capability. If you would like to purchase a oem nav unit, the best place is oemvalue.com. Personally I would choose an aftermarket unit. I have had the oem unit, and have switched to the eclipse units. The aftermarket units (all of them) have way more features and capabilities for around the same price. Check oemvalue.com for the right system for your truck and then check the eclipse and pioneer models (2 most popular in this forum) to compare features and price. Then you can make a knowledgable choice. Its all about research and finding the best setup for your specific situation and price range. Good luck.
I think the key here is whether your CD unit is built into your radio's face. I know on my 2004 Limited access cab with the non JBL factory radio the six disc changer is a part of the radio itself not remotely mounted elsewhere in the cab.
I'm researching and for now planning on installing a Eclipse AVN 5510 navigation unit in the next few months and it has two disc slots both are single disc. One slot is for the nav disc DVD or if you're not using the nav it will play a video DVD. The other slot will play music CD's while you are using the nav system if I've read it's specs correctly. I usually listen to music from Sirius satellite radio (which will play thru the AVN 5510 using a Sirius adapter unit) so the CD player will get little use from me. If I'm not mistaken a remote mounted CD player could be connected to this Eclipse unit but I have not looked into that option. There are other members (I'm new at this type of mod) a whole lot more knowledgeable than I might pop in with more info. I suggest you take the time to go to the various manufacturers web sites to check out their capabilities and to check out CNETS/ZDNETS website for reviews on the various nav units and how they rate for performance and operation.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
You have not read them correctly. I have the 6610 and the nav dvd is for the nav dvd only, nothing else. This is true for all eclipse and factory toyota navs (fujitsu ten makes both the eclipse and the toyota navs). On mine (6610), I can have the nav running up front and play dvd's for the kids on the rear headrest monitors, and if the kids use the wireless headphones I can play an external audio source (like my ipod). On the 5510 you can play an audio source (internal cd player or external source) and run the nav at the same time, as you stated, but that is its limit. Hope this helps.
I may have not been clear with my explanation about the 5510's capability. In my case I'll only using the 5510 and it's screen without anything for the back seats. I'll probably never take the nav disc out of it's slot and very likely the other slot will never see a CD disc unless Sirius isn't available. By the way do you know if the steering wheel controls on my 04 Limited will control the 5510 without having to install an adapter of some sort. I definitely won't be doing one of those clamp on thingys that Pioneer uses for theirs. The steering wheel controls isn't a deal breaker for me.

You are both right and both wrong. You are comparing two different units. The 6610 has two DVD slots and the 5510 has only one DVD slot and one CD slot.
The benifit of the 6610 is that you can play a DVD movie and use the NAV dvd functions at the same time. I think you can also watch two movies at the same time if you have an external monitor hooked up. You don't have that option on the 5510.........it's either NAV or Movie, but not both at the same time.

so, to clarify things in my own head: I have an 06 TLD DC w/JBL. If I buy an Eclipse 6610, that unit will go in place of my the stock radio front. I will be able to play both Nav and DVD's, but not use my CD changer. I will also be able to use my Sirius thru this unit, thereby not needing my starmate 4. Have I got it right?
There is no external CD changer in your stock unit. It's built into the head unit. You will be replacing the entire HU and either bypassing the stock amp or using the internal amp of the Eclipse unit.
The Eclipse HU can control an external Eclipse CD changer, Sirius tuner, HD radio tuner and an ipod controller.
You can only listen to one audio source at a time unless you use the outputs from the Eclipse HU to an external monitor with wireless headphones, for example.
The 6610 will allow you to keep the NAV dvd in and running while you also watch a dvd movie on the screen. You can't do that with the 5510.

Czechm8 has it exactly right. I am not 100% sure about the 5510, but the 6610 is plug and play for the steering wheel controls. And yes to your other questions about the sirius satellite, but you need an eclipse controller. They offer two models, one for basic and one for traffic. Check out fujistu ten on the web for all the accesories.
I downloaded the install instructions for the AVN 5510 from the Eclipse web site and it does show a back side connection for the steering wheel control female plug. I have the Sirius satellite controller on my list. Thanks for your input.

PS: cdfjake I'm sorry for weaseling into your post. I think we both are learning something from the responses though.

No need to apologize at all, youre exactly right. I would learn alot more if i wasnt a techno dummy! Where would the external changer go for the Eclipse unit?
