This is a discussion thread titled "GPS Antenna", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
With my Oem nav system, I located it behing the HU (bent bracket 90 degrees and mounted to air duct). With my eclipse unit, manual says to locate it on the right corner of the dash, but looks ugly. I ended up mounting it in the headliner in front of rear view mirror and out of sight. All places have worked with not problems.
that's ok..
how do you run the wire all the way up to the head liner? Does the arm pillar cover is pull off for you to run the wire inside?
Also, the GPS antenna must be facing up (round part faces up, flat part down) to get best reception. Round part must also not be blocked by anything for maximal gps signal to penetrates. Manual also mentioned that it must be mounted on the metal ground plate if mount inside on plastic.
Ya, run the wire up the pillar. Have the same reception as with the metal sticker on the dash as directed in the manual. I think the best reception was with the factory nav with the antenna mounted behind the unit under the dash.
You didn't describe your truck so my instructions are for a access cab. In order: remove four screws lift and remove the plastic door sill plate, then unscrew the plastic nut from the lower left kick panel (by the parking brake) then lift away and back downward watching the portion that runs up the front of the door opening (there are plastic wedges that fit into slots in the metal opening frame so be careful), remove the small rectangular plugs from the plastic assist handle and remove the handle with a # 30? torx screwdriver, then open the rear door and remove the small plastic cover by the upper access door latch, pull the front section of plastic that the plastic cover came from downward slightly and at the same time pull downward on the rear of the upper front door frame plastic surround that goes toward the windshield to release it from it's clips and lift that piece upward and toward the rear from the clips in the pillar. That should get you close but pay attention as you remove these pieces or you will break clips or the surround plastic part that hold those clips. It's not all that difficult but reasonable care is required. By the way the door sill cover will still have locating pins that position it over the screw holes after the screws are removed.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????

I have a 2007 DC. Are we talking about the same part here? Right now, the GPS antenna is sitting on the dash in front of the driver. I think core94 was trying to say that he put it on the headliner where the windshield meets...so basically he ran the wire up there under the a-pillar....you know, the little bar that attaches to the windshield next to the door but NOT part of the door....I think the cover for that just holds by some clips....not sure.
What you were describing up there..I have no clue what you were talking about.
On the earlier Tundras those parts have to be removed before you can remove the pillar cover you/he are talking about. The piece above the door is a part of that pillar cover and comes out as one. Hopefully the 07's are easier to remove. Your vehicle description says 2006 Tundra and if I had known I wouldn't have gone through all that description.

you said you mounted the antenna on top through the headliner. The antena upper part is round and the base is flat..the round part most face the glas (sky) to receive good signal....what do you use to mount up there? Can't really put a piece of double sided tape to the round part and stick it to the window's glass cuz the tape will block the signal out?
Ya, run the wire up the pillar. Have the same reception as with the metal sticker on the dash as directed in the manual. I think the best reception was with the factory nav with the antenna mounted behind the unit under the dash.
Eclipse warn not too place antenna within 20" of the HU (in the installation manual). This factory place would definately within the 20" inches. Also, the factory place is under the dash (center speaker grill) which blocks out the gps signal...I don't see how it could possibly be better reception.... I would agree that it will looks better though.
It is mounted (actually wedged) between the headliner and top of windshield so no tape required. The flat part of gps antenna is against headliner with round part facing up. There is no obstruction of the antenna (other than the glass). As far as the pillar removal, LGL002 has the right instructions for 1st generation tundras. Dont know about the 07's.
Cool..I think I might try that one then. It is currently sitting on the dash and I do get 4 sat..works great...but with all the wiring, it's an eye sore. I take it that you are not using the "ground" plate as mentioned in the manual? What the heck is that ground plate is for anyways?
