Well I am partial to the eclipse models (I have the 6610), the only thing is it is sirius not xm compatible. If you dont already have xm, I would go with sirius with the intergrated traffic (them bomb setup). If you already have xm, gonna need something else.

Already have 2 XM accounts and have had one of the for 4 years.

Try checking out the Pioneer Avic z1, dont know if it has xm or sirius, alot of people on TS like that setup as well.
I looked at the Avic D3 yesterday. I liked it except that you have to remove the Nav DVD in order to listen to music CDs. Which means you can't navigate and enjoy music at the same time.

For your budget, the AVIC D3 by Pioneer will fit the bill. As for the CD issue, if you're going to use the ipod, there's no need to play a music CD. I found the user (not editor) reviews on CNET.com very helpful here.
Crutchfield is even giving away a back up camera when you purchase a nav unit. You can also get the ipod adapter and even bluetooth for about $1,100, including shipping. The AVIC is XM compatible. You have to purchase an interface for it, but you can get one with nav-integrating traffic information. Look around in Crutchfield's and Pioneer's site for available accessories.
If you have the JBL system, you'll also need an adapter for it. This kind of info is where calling Crutchfield is very helpful. From all the reviews, the AVIC D3 sounds even better hooked up the JBL system than the stock stereo does.
Oh, and don't let Crutchfield tell you it won't fit, it will. Go to metraonline.com to find out which kit you need and call Crutchfield direct to have them add this to the cart if & when you buy it. See my post from yesterday and the responses to it.
The Eclipse units seem to be more expensive, and that's before the add-ons you'll want. Sounds like you can get what you want and more if you go with the AVIC D3 for at or under $1,500.

It needs to be simple enough to operate that even a wife can use it.
So, what fits the bill? Thanks.
I find this post funny to the tee dude i've showen you my system at the meet.Screen size on the pioneer Z1/z2 is 7 inch best in class.Let me advise a few thing's buy an Hdd system for all the mulitasking it does very well worth the money on features. Hdd has more voice commands and can store your music like an ipod .
Mine has Bluetooth and I use that feature more to and from the office.
Erik
P.s Ill be up in your area around Dec 13-17 not sure if i'm driving the Tundra or flying up but I'll advise you on what to buy.

Oh, and another thing. I have a chance to buy it on my Circuit City credit card for 0% intererst for 18 months. And since I want XM and not sirius, that pretty much limits me to the 2 Pioneer models.
